So, just to clarify, your protest is that if we had charged more money for printouts, there would be more money in the kitty to purchase a new one? We're only asking for 1/2 in donations. That's common practice in recent times, and I don't feel it's unreasonable. Where I feel bad is when next week we will ask for more donations for a GigE switch, and then after that a new machine. That is, asking the same people to dig into their pockets over and over again. I don't see how charging more for prints could have reduced the deterioration in any way. Keep in mind the current printer was probably obtained second hand. It is unfair that the same few people (not me)( keep on donating to the club, especially in this case where the old printer's usage should have been properly paid for. I just remember being astounded that the new laser printers were being used soooo cheaply, and noted that future replacements (of paper, toner and the printer itself) were going to cost more than the current running costs. Printers get used very infrequently by the membership as a whole, so why shouldn't this small usage have become user pays when we got the initial startup for free? The only cost to UCC was the paper that was used. At a cost of between $5 and $8 per ream (500 pages) we were making a slight profit on every page - the current rate is 2c per page, not 1c. UCC obtained more than enough LaserWriters to continue replacing the toner cartridges for free. Wear and tear is negligible on printers that arrive at UCC already having developed the signature paper ejection problem of the engine. > I know donations are not compulsory, but charging a proper amount > beforehand would have lessened the need for donations. UCC doesn't *need* donations in the first place - the habit is to ask for half in donations whether or not we have enough money in the kitty to purchase outright. > It is unfair that the same few people (not me)( keep on donating to > the club, especially in this case where the old printer's usage should > have been properly paid for. > The point of donations is to have the people that will use the new facilities bear more of the initial outlay. For a printer which requires you to pay for its upkeep anyway, it may be a little unfair, but it makes perfect sense for other purchases. Personally, I agree that in this case UCC should just buy it outright, but we did only ask for one-quarter in donations than one-half.
