It was formed in 1974 as a way for students to get time on the mainframe. Since then it has grown in one of the widely recognised computing groups in Australia, and its members have gone on to even greater things. Ian McKellar, was a UCC president. The UCC recently started tinderboxing [2] GNOME on it's Sun E6000, manbo [3]. Unfortunately, while the machine has been upgraded to have fast disks and a large amount of RAM, we have so far been unable to purchase new CPUs for it. Recently the opportunity has arisen to purchase two lots of 10 faster CPUs for the machine [4, 5]. While this is Ebay, we have dealt with this seller before in aquiring other spares for this machine. In short, the UCC is seeking sponsership to aquire these units and get them to Australia. While it is a lot of money (especially in Australian dollars) and hard to ask students for donations when they are sometimes struggling to eat, it is significantly less money for an American corporation. In exchange, we will send you a letter of gratitude, and list Redhat as a sponser of the UCC for the lifetime of the machine, on our website, in official publications and on the MOTD of the machine. Person Resposible for Request: Davyd Madeley is the UCC Secretary. James Andrewartha is the UCC Vice President, and maintaining the tinderbox. Either may be contacted. Request: The UCC is tinderboxing on a powerful, multicpu machine named manbo [3]. While it is powered by Solaris, we hope to use new tools available in Solaris to generate automated testing information to help make GNOME more stable and perform better clock for clock. The machine manbo has been upgraded with fast disks and lots of RAM (around 11G), what we want to do now is upgrade the CPUs. For AUD$1300, plus shipping, we can order 20 new CPUs for this machine, increasing its processing power by a factor of around 4x. UCC would be eternally grateful to Linux Australia, and would demonstrate this through mentions on the website, in official publications and on the machine MOTD for the rest of the machine's life. Obviously, this is a large sum of money to request, but the UCC is willing to accept any contribution that is made towards this goal. The only caveats on this are the CPUs must be matched (although they can have different amounts of cache) and that some of the IO boards are required to do things like talk to the disk array. > - are they new? The dealer selling the parts is an American company we have dealt with before to get parts (power modules and RAM ingots) for this machine and another like it (but smaller) previously. > - how much time will it take to perform an average regression run [1]? Empirical testing indicates that it will not be waiting for work, the tree is simply too large. If it is found to be building too often to be useful (that would have to be a complete build every hour) we'll simply load it with more testing tasks to complete. Some goals we have been discussing include upgrading to Solaris 10 to use the new dtrace tool and to allow dtracing of the desktop components. At the moment the build is taking too long in my opinion. We should be able to get it down to a couple of hours, my goal is to do it in under an hour. > - would this sort of project benefit more from donated CPU time on > something[2] like the spanking IBM hardware that just got loaned to ANU? There are four main points to running these builds on the sparc: - to quickly find out build regressions; - to identify build issues in building with high levels of parallelism; - to identify build regressions on Solaris/Sparc, which won't always be obvious to the x86 orientated community; and - to utiltise new Solaris analysis tools such as dtrace > 1: I know nothing about tinderbox, but I want to know if your machine > would always be behind reality, or always waiting for now work. To build the entirety of GNOME on my old laptop (an old pentium 4) took 13 hours. To build it on my old desktop (a newish pentium 4) took 6 hours. I haven't tried it building the stack top to bottom on my new laptop or desktop (no time). Manbo is currently taking around 11 hours, it has fast disks (Seagate Cheetahs, I think) and lots of RAM, so what we need is a CPU speed boost. > 2: That is, I'm raising the concept, not commiting the ANU machines, as > that is outside my power. Understood. I am also developing some software to parallelise builds on an Alpha/Linux cluster. This is however going to be a much more challenging project. It will also not give us the ability to utilise the Solaris features I've mentioned above. Are there other people on the Gnome team who can > comment on if such a machine is suited to their needs? Sure. There's a lot of work going into tinderbox stuff at the moment, and we're really hanging out for the opportunity to use some of the exceptional tools Sun are shipping with Solaris 10 (dtrace being the most obvious). More power for the UCC machine would allow us to do more regular builds, increase automated testing coverage (I'm really looking forward to this) and let more developers have CPU time for testing. I would like to know if UCC will be able to provide access to developers working on other projects - I think that will be awesome for Aussie FOSS hackers. :-) (Davyd, have you thought of asking Sun if they're interested in sponsoring this? They may have some refurbished hardware handy to donate.) - Jeff -- EuroOSCON: October 17th-20th http://conferences.oreillynet.com/eurooscon/ "I think his crackpipe is mixed with helium or something." - Colin Walters on Hans Reiser From ianw at gelato.unsw.edu.au Mon Aug 15 09:43:36 2005 From: ianw at gelato.unsw.edu.au (Ian Wienand) Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 11:43:36 +1000 Subject: [committee] [Linux-aus] Grant request In-Reply-To: <1123782237.14353.41.camel@frobisher.madeley.id.au> References: <1123782237.14353.41.camel@frobisher.madeley.id.au> Message-ID: <20050815014336.GG29115@cse.unsw.EDU.AU> On Fri, Aug 12, 2005 at 01:43:57AM +0800, Davyd Madeley wrote: > The UCC is tinderboxing on a powerful, multicpu machine named manbo [3]. > While it is powered by Solaris, we hope to use new tools available in > Solaris to generate automated testing information to help make GNOME > more stable and perform better clock for clock. I don't want to start a pointless flame war, but in my opinion this really sounds like something that Sun should be supporting, rather than Linux Australia. Sun's Java Desktop is based on Gnome, IIRC, so they have a vested interest in having it work. If they want to show off OpenSolaris and DTrace (I mean god knows they can talk about it) then why don't they throw a few of those new cheap developer boxes at you? On the other hand, I realise that it's not always easy to get vendors to buy into this sort of thing (HP if you're listening we'd love a dedicated build box for kernel regression testing ;) -i -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... To cut to the chase, the company where I work, Lateral Sands in Subiaco, has a pair of Sun Sparc Ultra-10 machines (Tatooine and Hoth) which we acquired around 2000-01 and which are no longer useful to us. The machines have keyboards and mice, but no monitors. I cannot remember their memory/disk configuration. Both were in working order when shut down, although Hoth has a known problem with cache memory in its CPU which causes occasional core dumps when stressed (sounds like some people I know). Sun would not honour the US warranty and we were not interested in paying A$2k for a replacement CPU module. At worst you should end up with one fully working machine and some spare parts, though I would imagine a surplus CPU module might be more easily obtainable now. Anyway, we're happy to donate these two machines to the club if you can find a use for them. All I ask is that you crank out a thank you letter in return. Prior to their departure from here I'll need to fire them up and do the usual disk sanitization, though I don't think there's much on the machines that's secret any more. Let me know if you're interested and we can organize a date/time for pickup. I can be phoned at work on 6380 8008 or emailed at the address above, or at my 'home' address phil at clew.com.au. We'd certainly be interested - we're currently lacking Sun user boxes, and fresh hardware is always good :) Friday I'm free all day to collect the machines, or if that's not convenient, name another time and we can probably find someone to come and collect them. I cleaned off tatooine over the weekend, and have hoth under way now. I'll be here any time from 10am onwards on Friday, but let me know before you appear as I may vanish for a spot of lunch at some point. If you guys feel you want them sooner than Friday then that's cool too - just phone me and let me know you're coming and I'll wave you off if it's inconvenient (unlikely).
