This policy outlines the reasons for which a member's access to his or her account may be suspended (locking of account), and the procedure for reinstitution of access (unlocking). This policy is a guideline for those involved in managing UCC accounts and facilities. *Why may accounts be locked?* Accounts may be locked for 3 reasons: - Disciplinary: When a member's behaviour is unacceptable. This may include, but is not limited to: - Breach of the UCC UNIX/Network Account policy, and, by extension, the UWA Network and Security Policy; or - Abuse of the clubroom resources (e.g., not maintaining a reasonable level of tidiness). - Security: When, in the opinion of a Wheel member, the account poses a serious security risk to the member or the Club, for example, by having a weak password. - Expiration of Membership: When a a member does not renew his or her account. *Procedure for Locking* - Locking an account must be performed by a Wheel member. - Members of Door group may request that a Wheel member lock an account for disciplinary reasons. As well as disabling access to the account, the Wheel member responsible must: - Notify the member, preferably via electronic mail to a non-UCC address. - Notify the committee (committee-only at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au) and other members of Wheel group (wheel at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au). The technical methods of locking an account are beyond the scope of this document; Wheel members should familiarise themselves with the procedure. *How may accounts be unlocked?* The procedure for unlocking an account depends on the reason for locking: - Disciplinary: The matter will be discussed at the next UCC Committee meeting. The member with the locked account and the responsible Wheel/Door member will be invited to present their point of view to committee. The committee will decide if any further action is appropriate. The account will remain locked until the committee passes a motion to unlock it. - Security: The account will be unlocked once a Wheel member is satisfied that the account no longer poses a significant security risk to the member and the Club. - Expiration of membership: The account will be unlocked upon presentation of a current membership card to a Wheel or Door member. =============================== From committee at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Tue Apr 7 15:15:01 2009 From: committee at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au (Committee Agenda Daemon) Date: Tue, 7 Apr 2009 15:15:01 +0800 (WST) Subject: [committee] 45 minute warning: This Week's Committee Meeting Agenda Message-ID: <20090407071501.496E56C0A6@martello.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au> The current agenda is: * Office Bearers Reports (President/Vice Pres/Treasurer/Secretary/Fresher Rep) * Machine Technical Reports - Servers - Network - Desktops - Appliances - New equipment * Drinks and Snacks * Mail, Guild and SOC * Action Items - [DAA] to fix snacks cupboard (needs new hinge). - [LOL] to investigate gibson repair under warranty. - [SJY] to send email for donation drive for new air con. - [M12] and [DAA] to cooperate with Unisfa's sub-committee to organise the Quiz Night. - [SJY] to submit budget. - [LOL] to email ucc@ to explain that the only thing stopping projects is initiative. - [M12] to go on snack run. - [CJS] to email wheel to request firmware upgrade for UGG. * General Business: rvvs89 : Victor for door trs80 : Easter LAN - night pass mitch : UCC buy some electronics stuff, Solder, etc (about $50 with of goodies), Maybe clean out the Tool cupboard too.. - Aplg [FEL] will be late mitch : Snacks for the vendo, Theres little or none left.. nightrdr : Clubroom is filthy. I'm guessing this is why we still haven't received a semester 2 grant. Obviously, we haven't received an O-Day grant either. I'll check the account again after the study break. Also, I spoke to Henry about getting that cupboard fixed -- he said to email him at henry at guild.uwa.edu.au with the details and he'd organize it. Could somebody else please do this? I don't know exactly which cupboard it is that's broken. I have added this to the agenda. [SJY] -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I've been speaking with rvvs89 on IRC about our main "MegaLAN" but wanted to officially see if UCC are keen on coming along/advertising our event within UCC? Attached is a zipped pdf copy of the poster, but it's completely up to you guys how you would like to advertise this if you choose to. Some additional details left out on the poster: - There will be set tournaments and prizes available for anyone to participate in. At the moment we are looking towards TF2 5v5, WC3/DOTA FFA, TrackMania FFA, and Wii Tennis as the lineup but will post a full schedule soon. - UCC are affiliates of SCISSA so entry is only $10 for UCC members. - We are capping the number of lanners at 75 or till the hall room gets full. Suggest getting there earlier than later if interested. - Pizza and Breakfast runs will be on so bring money for food. - Only one power port will be provided. Bring only one power board per person. Daisy-chaining is prohibited. - Alcohol is prohibited. If interested we'll endeavour to keep UCC posted on any updates as they come through and hope to see you guys there! [SJY] -------------- next part -------------- University Computer Club Box 22, M300 The University of Western Australia ATTN: Maxine Gamble, John Arfield CC: Dominic Rose, Jon Stubbs RE: UCC charged for AARNet usage at ?affiliate? rates Dear Maxine and John, As discussed briefly in my informal meeting with Maxine on 14th April, I am writing to ask that ITS consider charging UCC for usage of the AARNet internet connection at ?student? rates, rather than ?affiliate? rates. Having discussed this with the UCC Committee, I believe that there are four reasons to do so, outlined below. UCC is a unique and historic institution on campus The University Computer Club was founded in 19741 ? long before the University itself provided general purpose computer access to students. The club purchased its own computer, an IBM 1620, to facilitate this, and lobbied the West Australian Regional Computing Centre for student access to the few mainframes available in WA at that time. Indeed, the club was founded 2 years before the University?s own Department of Computer Science. The club?s 35-year history is unparalleled amongst student computing clubs worldwide, and many UCC alumni have become significant figures in the computing industry both in Perth and abroad. The ?affiliate? rate is prohibitively expensive for a student-funded club The club is funded entirely by the contributions of its members (including membership fees and donations), with the exception of the bi-annual grants provided by the Guild?s Societies Council (typically amounting to less than $1500 per annum). As such, AARNet connection fees consume a very large portion of the club?s yearly budget (and in fact constitute the club?s largest expense by far), and prevent investment in more permanent club resources such as computer hardware. As a result of these high fees, the club is forced to use a separate internet connection (known as ?Resnet?, also provided by ITS) with drastically reduced bandwidth for the majority of ?off-net? traffic. This connection is shared with the residential colleges, and is unusable for purposes such as streaming video, which have bandwidth requirements exceeding that provided by the portion of the Resnet link allocated to UCC. The UCC exists solely to provide benefits to students The UCC is run entirely by students, and supported by the Guild of Undergraduates. Though UWA alumni/non-students are welcome to join the UCC and utilize its resources, they must pay a higher membership fee, and they are prohibited from holding positions on the Committee. As such, the vast majority of the club?s activity is conducted for the benefit of current University students. I believe it is therefore reasonable, for the purposes of AARNet billing, to treat the club the same way as the University?s students. UCC members are better off using the SNAP VPN than a direct connection to AARNet As a result of the above, members who require a higher-speed connection than the one offered by Resnet are required to use the SNAP VPN while at UCC. This is less than ideal for two reasons: firstly, it places unnecessary load on the VPN system; secondly, it is inconvenient, as it requires that students have a SNAP full access account, and precludes UCC from configuring the connection automatically/centrally (as UCC is not eligible for its own SNAP account). If UCC were charged the ?student? rate for internet access, students wouldn?t need to connect to SNAP, and the University?s costs would be reduced slightly (since, unlike students, the UCC would not receive any allowance for AARNet usage free of charge). The ?subscription fee? model is unfair The ?subscription fee? charging model used to charge ?affiliates? for AARNet usage essentially mandates that the club pay a subscription fee based on the previous year?s usage, as well as a fee for that year?s estimated usage and penalty fees should actual usage exceed estimated usage. This model is unfair, primarily because it charges retroactively. For 2009, UCC has been charged a $900 subscription fee on the basis of 2008?s usage ? which was already paid for in full at the old rate of $35/GB. 2009?s usage is expected to be substantially lower, as a server which used the AARNet link for most of 2008 has now been shut down. Furthermore, to a club like UCC with highly variable usage levels, the new charging model is likely to act as a price increase. If the club were to use exactly the estimated usage in 2009, the cost per gigabyte would be slightly lower than the previous rate of $35/GB (excepting the retroactive charge for 2008 usage). If the club were to use less than that, the cost per gigabyte could exceed $35/GB; if the club exceeds the limit, $35/GB charges apply in addition to the subscription charges. In light of the above, the UCC Committee requests that the club be charged for its usage of the AARNet link at the ?student? rate of $6.60/GB, rather than under the ?subscription fee? model for affiliates. Furthermore, we ask that the $935.00 paid so far, for connection under the subscription fee model for Q1 and Q2 2009, be applied as a credit to UCC?s account, subject to the cost of any 2009 usage at student rates. We look forward to hearing from you. I'm sorry for not publicising this better - it was in yesterday's UCC News, but that was the only real notice. At the quiz night meeting, we decided that no more presale tickets will be printed, and the information I have to hand says that there are NO MORE AVAILABLE - all UCC and UniSFA presale tickets have been sold. There *will* be a limited number of tickets available on the door. I can't tell you how many (there's currently a bit of contention about how much space will be available), but they are in hot demand so arrive early to avoid disappointment. Only one ticket will be available per person - if you want five tickets, you need to turn up with five people. It's inevitable that someone will miss out and for that I apologise. I know not everyone will get to be on the table they wanted to be, but on the upside, you'll make some new friends! (copying to ucc@, probably needs better distribution to UniSFA?)
