The Undercroft is a pretty good place to hold a LAN, especially given
that we can get it for free. There are a few problems with using it
semi-regularly, though:
-Technically table and chairs are meant to cost us money to use
(though we haven't been charged in the past)
-People get lazy and drive up to the undercroft up the service lane,
potentially annoying the university
-Requires a lot more organisation and planning well in advance to
actually get a booking.

I don't know about the Sue Boyd Room, but being in the guild area
fixes a few of those problems. Another option is one of the tutorial
room in the arts area.

It appears that catfish, a machine consisting predominantly of parts that 
I donated, was among the items stolen, which brings the total to 3 towers 
unless someone incorrectly recognised it as a different machine.

Done. There was quite a bit of mail, including a regular tax invoice for 
resnet that was due on the 23rd of June (they billed us much earlier than 
usual apparently), we haven't yet received anything following up that 
invoice.

Only two black towers were missing, so I guess I incorrectly guessed
the names of them! (Unless there is indeed a tower we have forgotten
to take account of).

cephalopod is still in the clubroom. According to OCS Inventory, catfish 
had a 2.8GHz P4, 2GB RAM in 4x512MB sticks, 250GB ST3250823AS HDD, a 
6600G and a MSI MS-6758 motherboard.

'lo all,

While closing up UCC tonight, I noticed that the door lock would not lock, 
was too hot to touch, and that it was emmitting a smell of electrical 
burning. Due to the obvious fire danger and security risk, and without 
access to the machine room due to the recent replacement of the lock, I 
have had to remove the lock. A multimeter suggests that the door server is 
even now still emmitting a 12V current.

Since the Guild is now closed for the week end, I'm leaving the door open 
and without the lock installed so that David Adam doesn't have to climb 
down tomorrow when opening Cameron Hall for the Cleanup and subsequent 
Independence LAN. UWA Security rarely opens Cameron Hall on the week end 
unless requested to do so by students from Cameron Hall clubs and even 
then only occasionally, so the club should be safe until then - not that a 
locked door seems to stop anyone stealing things from us.

For the benefit of whoever reinstalls the door lock, the white cable was 
in the left terminal, and the red in the right terminal. You'll also need 
a medium size flat head screw driver (I haven't been able to find any in 
UCC after all those tools were stolen).

The door lock has been reinstalled, and the distal cause fixed: the modem 
that runs the door lock occasionally (every 5 years or so) requires a 
power cycle. Tested and working.

Please be advised, further to the telephone conversation I had this  
afternoon with a lady from your office, that the Resnet invoice for  
the University Computing Club, numbered 0219101851 and due 23/06/2009  
(issued 09/06/2009 apparently), was not received by the club until  
2/7/2009.

It would appear that the Guild of Undergraduates were slow in  
processing the mail meant for the club (I'm guessing they've been on  
reduced hours with the exams and ensuing holiday period).

Firstly, please accept my apologies for sending an unsolicited email
however I have found that many people prefer an email that they can read
in their own time to being bothered by a telephone call.  If you would

A CAST OF THOUSANDS is a casting company who cast for television shows for
production houses and free to air and pay tv networks.  At the present
time we are looking for single male intellectuals who have passionate
interests (which is why I am emailing you).  I'm hoping that you might
have any computer enthusiasts that might fit our brief.  We have been
emailing various sorts of sporting clubs, universities, and specialist
interest/hobby clubs.

I believe we all have a little 'geek' in us and one person's hobby or
passion is another person's geekdom (I know this from personal
experience, I, who think I'm very cool but is viewed as a bit of a geek by
my friends)  and I would appreciate your assistance in helping us find
candidates for the show 'Beauty & The Geek'.  Beauty and the Geek  is a
proven successul format overseas and the Seven Network and A Cast of
Thousands are very excited at the opportunity to turn the tables and show
Australia that smart geeky guys have a thing or two to teach the
'beauties' out there and hopefully win some cash on the way.

It is that time again where the Cameron Hall clubs get together to organise the Charity Vigil. With this in mind, as is the tradition, each

chaired by yours truly. I'd like each club to organise someone to participate in this as soon as possible. I would prefer that this be done

G'day Henry,

According to Andrew's email (quoted below), the SOC guys were able to
find the original submissions for semester 2 grants and they've all
been processed and dealt with.

Could you please check whether or not a semester 2 SOC grant ever
arrived in the UCC account?

You might remember when I first spoke to you about this in April, SOC
said that they'd 'found the applications' and dealt with the grants,
but you said that a few clubs had missed out, including SABAS (and
apparently UCC). I'm just wondering whether Andy's referring to the
first discovery (in April, which led to 'most' clubs getting their
grants) or a subsequent one - that is, whether or not anything was
done between April 28th, after most clubs had received their grants,
and July 16th, when I finally got a response to my emails. I don't
want to hassle them if the money actually came through in the end,
though!

Door isn't unlocking. Specifically, the mechanism isn't responding to
unlock commands.

 - The lock is not hot.
 - I don't have access to the machine room, so I'm unable to
powercycle the modem; don't know if that would help.

Fixed! Thanks [DJA], [RVS], [CJS] and [TRS] for narrowing down the culprit.

The door solenoid is run through the modem;
 * which has a serial cable to centipede, the DecServer 200/MC;
 * which MOP boots off madako and can be talked to by mermaid or mussel;
 * mermaid the coke-server runs [DAG]'s special /usr/sbin/opendoor;
 * which connects to centipede and tells the modem to ATH1, then ATH0.

mermaid's latd had gotten non-responsive. (mussel's was fine and could
control the modem) [TRS] kill -9'ed and restarted it, then all was good.

If the door solenoid had been hot, that would mean the modem is stuck
on and has not successfully been told to ATH0. (so powercycling would
help turn it off at least)

UCC submitted a form for 2008 semester 2 grants along with all the
other clubs, so it looks like ours was lost and never found, unlike
the other submissions? Is there some other reason UCC missed out on a
grant while other clubs got one?

UCC is not on it though Unigames is.
I was also requested to give SABAS their missing grant on 1/5/09 .

the original submissions for semester 2 grants and they've all been

Could you please check whether or not a semester 2 SOC grant ever arrived in
the UCC account?

You might remember when I first spoke to you about this in April, SOC said
that they'd 'found the applications' and dealt with the grants, but you said
that a few clubs had missed out, including SABAS (and apparently UCC). I'm
just wondering whether Andy's referring to the first discovery (in April,
which led to 'most' clubs getting their
grants) or a subsequent one - that is, whether or not anything was done
between April 28th, after most clubs had received their grants, and July
16th, when I finally got a response to my emails. I don't want to hassle
them if the money actually came through in the end, though!

Adrian and I just refilled the coke machine and we're now running low on 
drinks. We have slightly more than 1 box of lift and fanta remaining in 
reserve. It would be great if someone with a car could take the initiative 
and purchase some drinks before the next meeting so we can approve 
reimbursement as soon as possible.

We need a lot of coke since it sells so quickly, a few boxes of coke zero, 
and a box or two of any other well priced drinks that are available too.

It's not looking like it's the modem, since Rufus powercycled it to no 
effect so the mechanism itself might be screwy. Since the door can only be 
opened from the inside right now, it's not an awesome situation.
