Or was just generally broken. Anyway, seems to work now, though user preferences have been lost - sorry. Works perfectly, no errors. If someone wants to try DVDs that would be good. The CD-ROM is complaining about drivers but otherwise works fine. Now all we need is a new HDD and then Cobbler will be the ultimate movie ripping - er - home theatre production machine. If anyone knows WHY it started working, I would be interested in knowing.
