Yes, we are still planning on holding the Sleepover. However, the person who is sorting through the red tape (Chris Bobridge, bless his socks ;) ) was temporarily distracted by real-life, and I didn't want to give any details until we were sure we could hold it when we said we would. So, at this point all I can say is that we are _CONSIDERING_ holding the Sleepover on the Saturday directly after UWA exams finish. That is, Saturday the 22nd November. No, Shig and Meryki's wedding is the _following_ weekend. No, UCC Camp shouldn't be that weekend. So, in theory everyone should be able to kick back and enjoy themselves after exams finish. Hopefully some of you will be concious. *grin* Whether we can actually hold it then remains to be seen. While I'm at it, if anyone has any serious problems with this date they should get back to me. If we get enough complaints, we may think about changing our plans. Thankyou, Chas. The result of this is that UCC email accounts will be non-functionlal for an unknown length of time. So, I will be creating a very dodgey, very temporary website for the sole purpose of making announcements about the Sleepover. I would appreciate it if people who read this message could help spread this information amongst those who do not get a chance to read their email before UCC goes down again. As an update on progress, we are still aiming for this Saturday night. Risk management plan has been submitted and we are waiting on word from the relevent authorities. Cross fingers everyone. If we can make Saturday, sincere apologies to those who have said they cannot make that date. Unfortunately, Saturday is by far the best time to hold it at the moment. Thanks, Chas. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD! Message-ID: <20031118181050.D7D4817E19@mooneye.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au> 12:20am Monday morning, somebody decided to wipe out UCC. Thanks to some quick reflexes by Nick, they didn't get terribly far. As quite a few of UCC's machines appear to have been compromised, they are being reinstalled from scratch, one by one. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD as soon as you can, to something completely new. pwgen (installed on mussel) will give you a selection of memorable passwords to choose from. You will need to use "yppasswd" on morwong or mussel, FROM A MACHINE YOU TRUST. ALL ACCOUNTS WITH PASSWORDS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED by Sunday 23rd November WILL BE LOCKED. ssh on mussel was found to be trojaned, and logged every use of a password or passphrase on a key in the last couple of weeks. RECREATE YOUR SSH KEYS and CLEAN OUT authorized_keys FILES. - mail should be flowing once more, as asclepius churns out it's 8000 queued mails into mooneye. No mail was lost, just a little held up. - flame is online. - mussel has been reinstalled. People should be able to login again. Webmail will return later. - mermaid is offline until it gets reinstalled, probably tomorrow arvo. this means dispense stuff and web pages. - mojarra is offline and will be until it gets reinstalled. If you want any programs installed on mussel, email wheel@ucc. Questions, comments? Reply to ucc@ucc. Flames > /dev/zero Change your passwords. Be paranoid. Change your ssh keys. Lots of things are changing to prevent this happening again. Thanks to Matt, Nick, James, Trent and others who helped out rebuilding machines. Regards, Bernard. So finally I can say that (barring nuclear strikes or other similar disasters) the Sleepover is DEFINITELY on. THIS SATURDAY (22nd). 7pm. Cameron Hall. Movies. LAN gaming. Console games. Anime(hopefully). Board/card games. Free Pizza and breakfast. Other Fun Stuff (TM). All for a good cause. Hopefully the lead-up means this won't be too short notice for anyone. A few random comments: You are reminded that the Sleepover is an ALCOHOL FREE event. As one of the conditions on us being able to hold this event, there will be signs up stating that there are no alcohol, cigarettes or other drugs allowed on the premises. We would appreciate it if everyone adhered to this. Given the late notice, it would be helpful if people could try and get the message out to as many people as possible via word of mouth etc. I apologise in advance for any incovenience that the rushed preparations and bureaucratic conditions may cause. Please bear with us, things will possibly be a bit shoddy. I know that several people will not be able to make it (for which I also apologise). As a result, it would be great if people could try and a) rope other people into coming; or b) gather a bit more sponsorship money in order to make up the "shortfall" we are likely to have. Of course, this isn't crucial, but it would be nice ;) There were a few people who said they could bring a spare computer for general use at the LAN. If they are still able to do so, that would be wonderful. And if anyone else feels like joining in, even better ;) In my last email, I mentioned a website (unigames people please ignore - you didn't get that one ;P), but I forgot to give an url. Well as it turned out the wonderfull UCC people were able to restore normality quickly so it wasn't that relevant. However for the sake of completeness, I will put the information up anyway at: http://tartarus.uwa.edu.au/~chassb/ That's about all I can think of at the moment - updates may be forthcoming ;) Hope I see all of you on Saturday. Firstly, UCC camp is on again this year. From Friday 5th December to Sunday the 7th, it's two full days of squash, swimming, gaming, bushwalking and drinking. The price is $40 for members, $45 for non-members (bring your friends), with extras being $5 for (some) food, and pool use being $5.50. The food includes breakfast stuff and a BBQ Saturday night, but not lunch or Friday dinner (there will be a pizza run on Friday however). For more details, and to register, visit http://camp.ucc.asn.au/ Secondly, the committee has approved purchasing an eMac, once half the price (currently $1200) has been pledged by members. The oday coke account has been assigned for pledges, so you can just "dispense give oday ", or email emac@ucc.asn.au with the amount you want to pledge. Finally, we're having a competition for a new UCC T-Shirt for 2004. Entries are open until the committee meeting after the camp (12th December), and the winner gets a free tshirt with their design on it. Send your entries (with a link to the image, not attached) to committee@ucc.asn.au. -- # TRS-80 trs80(a)ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au #/ "Otherwise Bub here will do \ # UCC President http://trs80.ucc.asn.au/ #| what squirrels do best | [ "There's nobody getting rich writing ]| -- Collect and hide your | [ software that I know of" -- Bill Gates, 1980 ]\ nuts." -- Acid Reflux #231 / From chas@mussel.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Wed Nov 26 06:06:25 2003 From: chas@mussel.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au (Chas Stan-Bishop) Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2003 14:06:25 +0800 (WST) Subject: [ucc-announce] Sleepover Wrap-up In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hello everyone, The sleepover has been and gone for another year, and while it wasn't as big as last year, we did okay given all the problems. We can't be sure of exact numbers until fridge stocktakes have been made and we have spoken to PAC, but we raised something in the vicinity of $1000-$1200. I would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who helped out in various ways, including those who watched the door during the night and those who helped me with (i.e. did ;P) cleaning up, but special mention must go to: Chris Bobridge - This guy is the standout performer, as he handled the risk management stuff. Without his efforts, the event wouldn't have happened. On top of that he also did an awful lot of random running around. Oliver Mailes, James Andrewartha, Stephen Griffiths and the guys from UWAnime - these were the people who helped out with a lot of the other random things we had to organise. Thanks to the UWAnime crew for organising the anime screening - hopefully you guys will get involved next year as well. Cameron McFarland for the use of his projector, VFAC (and the othe occupants of that room) for the use of their clubroom, and various people for having their computers available for the LAN. Jen McCutcheon for her outstanding fundraising efforts - she collected by far the most sponsorship, with a little over $250. Certainly the Luke Dunlop of 2003 ;) Lastly, thank you to everyone who attended, even though some of you took some convincing *grin*. Much fun was had, and with any luck next year will be bigger and better (with more people collecting sponsorship). It is certainly likely to face less trials :) See you next year, Chas.
