For UCC newcomers, the Vigil is a chance to stay up all night and play computer games, while raising money for charity. Our chosen charity for this year is the Stand By Me Youth Service, which runs programs and provides advocacy for teens. There'll be more than just a LAN running during the Vigil, though - Unisfa will be screening movies, UWAnime will be running an anime screening, and Unigames will be providing boardgames and running one-off dungeon crawls. Pizza for dinner and pancakes for breakfast will be provided free. Entry will cost you $10 at the door or at least $8 sponsorship, but of course please try and get as much sponsorship as you can. Sponsorship forms are available in the clubroom. ============ UCC Dinner ============ The UCC turns 32 (0x20) this year, and our annual dinner is a suitably exciting! Just $40 for a full buffet dinner at Royal Perth Yacht Club, just across from UWA. Proudly supported by the UWA Guild of Undergraduates, who are providing an hour of FREE pre-dinner drinks - meet us there at 6pm on the 15th of September, or be at the clubroom at 5:30 to wander over. Mr Stuart Nixon will be at the UCC on Friday evening (before the Vigil) about 6pm to talk to anyone who's interested - more information is available from president at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au if you're not sure if it's for you. If you're looking at doing honours or postgraduate work in Computer Science, this sounds like a fantastic opportunity. [Ed. it's worth adding that anyone who needs to do a final year project as part of their degree. There is something called CEED, which might offer an opportunity for you to get the project, some of that required work experience and some pocket money all at once.] ================= Find Ex-Members ================= We'd love to see ex-members at the dinner - invite them along! - but if they can't make it (or you're a current member who's stuck in Sydney or San Francisco), please ask them to send us a postcard - our mailing address is on the website at http://ucc.asn.au/aboutucc/contact.ucc =============== Murphy's Lore =============== Thanks to the incredibly dedicated hard work of Grahame Bowland and his team of enthusiastic contributors, the UCC is proud to announce that the first Murphy's Lore for a long time is published and ready. Everyone should come, have fun and support Stand By Me Youth Service. Everyone should of course have a sponsorship form but there are still some available in the various clubrooms for that last minute pestering of friends and workmates. Also, if you know anyone who isn't on any of these lists/doesn't check their email, remind them that the Vigil is on and, if necessary, drag them along. Remember this is all for charity so the more people we have coming, the more money we raise for Stand By Me Youth Service. ************* FOOD INFORMATION **************** There will be FREE PIZZA arriving at around 8:00, so if you want food, make sure you've arrived by then. There will also be breakfast provided in the form of FREE PANCAKES, if you've managed to stick around for the whole night. ************ LAN INFORMATION ****************** We will be setting up for the LAN in the early afternoon and aim to have all the cabling set up by 3.30pm. An electrician will be up to check the wiring between 3.30pm and 4pm, so if you are bringing your own PC to the LAN please bring it along before 3.30pm or after about 4.30pm, so that we don't clutter up the loft while the electrician is working. (And while I'm at it please remember to bring your LAN cable and headphones.) If you don't have your own PC, don't let that deter you - there will be a couple of computers available for general use on the night. ************* OTHER EVENT INFORMATION **************** Both Unisfa and UWAnime are going to have a screening schedule posted on the night so you can decide what to watch. UCS won't have a schedule of events - they'll be running card games and music in their clubroom, so you can drop by their room anytime. ************* RAFFLE REMINDER/INFORMATION **************** Our generous sponsor the Co-op Bookshop has given us two $25 vouchers which will be raffled off during the course of the night. A gold coin gets you a ticket, so drop by the front desk during the night to grab a ticket or few. Also, note that the raffle doesn't get drawn until the early hours of the morning. So, if you have to leave early, make sure you leave your tickets with someone who will still be there. If no-one comes forward when a number is drawn, we just draw again. ******************************* That's about it. Remember that this is all for charity, so let's all have a great time and try and raise as much money as we can for Stand By Me Youth Service. Even if you can't attend the whole night, drop by for a few hours, grab a bite of pizza, and enjoy yourself. :) Jen McCutcheon Charity Vigil Subcommittee From zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Fri Sep 8 16:10:19 2006 From: zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au (David Adam) Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2006 16:10:19 +0800 (WST) Subject: [ucc-announce] ADDENDUM: UCC News - 9 Sept 06 In-Reply-To: <1157547673.7977.76.camel@frobisher.madeley.id.au> References: <1157547673.7977.76.camel@frobisher.madeley.id.au> Message-ID: On Wed, 6 Sep 2006, Davyd Madeley wrote: > ============================= > RESEARCH PROGRAMMERS WANTED > ============================= > The UCC has been contacted by a local start-up - they are looking for > UWA students who are interested in working part-time for six to eight > months on research projects including advanced computer vision theory > and maths, hardware/software interface systems and processing of large > (5,000+ CPU hours) image processing tasks for large (100,000+ photos) > amounts of data. > > Mr Stuart Nixon will be at the UCC on Friday evening (before the Vigil) > about 6pm to talk to anyone who's interested - more information is > available from president at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au if you're not sure if it's > for you. No piracy on our network! ================================ In the last couple of weeks, various club members have had their accounts suspended for sharing copyright files via their web space. You can read up on our network policy[1], but the basic message is DON'T DO THIS. Legality or ethics aside, sharing MP3s or other copyright material from UCC servers is a really good way to get us in trouble. Particularly if you're then advertising the fact that the files are there via, say, a blog or LiveJournal. You can expect a swift account locking if another member brings this sort of behaviour to the attention of the Powers That Be.
