Thanks for the advice, people.  I do have a decided bias to Sony Trinitrons
and settled for a 17" with a Trinitron tube for $699.  Seems a bit of a waste
really as it's connected to my old X-terminal at 1024x768 but my dad seems
to like it.

Picked up a HP695C for $219 which should work with Ghostscript as a magic
filter.  The interesting bit is an Accton Ethernet Print Server which is a
video cassette sized box with 10-base2 on one side and parallel on another.
At least I won't have to recompile my kernel to support the parallel port!
Also, 10m long printer cables and (more) holes through walls are unfeasible.
