This came up many years ago - my suggestion was cockroaches. You could 
just toss in any food residue (pizza scraps, etc) that goes in the bin 
now, and see how big a cockroach population you could reach. The number 
of living cockroaches would go up and down with the food supply (they'd 
have to eat each other during holidays). No need to clean the tank, ever...
