[ucc] Reversing IDE leads?

I've got a SFF desktop here that I'm squeezing a second drive in to.

The drive locations are offset so I've tried take a dual drive IDE cable and
reversing it (so the IDE connector that would normally go to the mobo is at
the far drive allowing some extra cable length).

This has worked in the past (on other machines) but I tried it yesterday and
the machine reports a controller error. Oddly if I do the cable the right
way around it works.
To the best of my knowledge these cables are straight through
(http://www.hardwarebook.info/IDE_Internal). Drives are manually jumpered
master / slave.

Any ideas? Obvious solution is to just get another cable...

Cheers, Antony.
