...and here I was thinking the Committee was out of touch enough that it
wanted to buy another effectively single user desktop machine outright
rather than leverage club cash with donations; and to ignore buying a
~$1500 flavour-of-the-year virtual host server!

Me too! Thanks to those who made it happen. I already gave $50 to [TRS]
for the Xeon machine; I'm hereby retrospectively pledging another $50
to the Mac, or Xeon, or whatever's up next on the list.
(I do hope that now we'll have the taste of a bargain $450 virtual server
that we'll upgrade it next year to one with shiny new CPU extensions)
