[CDG5] MemRetry's objective

Fellow hackers,
I wonder what purpose Nanokernel's sophisticated retry code was designed
for?
Until now, I only stepped through this code using MAME's integrated
debugger. While running in an emulator, I mostly get DSI exceptions causing
the retry code to fail and to drop into the secondary exception handler
that is capable of handling of "hardcore" VM exceptions like hash table
misses, access violation etc.
So, from the emulator's POV, the retry code seems to be quite useless.
Is there any real hardware circumstances causing the retry code to succeed
and thus be useful?
Cheers
Max
