Looking into this, it's due to the UCC's non-conformance with this part of the UWA Spam Policy: Tagged spam will not be forwarded to an external email address, such as a personal hotmail address. This is to prevent the University from being blacklisted as a sender of spam. Typically the UCC sends over 1000 spams out per day. I've looked into it, and this is almost entirely tagged SPAM being forwarded out to external member addresses. An increasing number of internet sites use the amount of "spam" arriving as metric when deciding whether or not to blacklist a site; the fact that the mail is forwarded often does not matter. Can we have an estimate as to when this will be fixed? The policy is here, for your reference: http://www.uwa.edu.au/it/policy/existing?f=102683 -- Grahame Bowland Email: grahame.bowland at uwa.edu.au Information Technology Services Phone: +61 8 6488 1175 The University of Western Australia Fax: +61 8 6488 1109 CRICOS: 00126G From matt at ucc.asn.au Tue May 2 17:46:39 2006 From: matt at ucc.asn.au (Matt Johnston) Date: Tue, 2 May 2006 17:46:39 +0800 Subject: [committee] Non-comformance with UWA Spam Policy In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20060502094639.GB4754@ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au> On Tue, May 02, 2006 at 03:53:47PM +0800, Grahame Bowland wrote: > > Hi guys > > UCC is still one of the top senders of outgoing spam. Could you give us some numbers on the false-positive rates of the UCS spam tagging? That will let affected members (and ourselves) make an informed decision as to how unforwarded mail should be handled. The next scheduled event is a LAN on the 27/28th of May (there is absolutely no hope of a Quiz Night being organised in that time, not a successful one at least). I would like to propose if we hold a joint quiz night, it be in second semester (and we start organising that ASAP too). The event after that is the MTD, we should start organising that now if we want to break out of this rut of events that suck. On money, we've been spending money at an incredible rate, we need to cap our expenditure before we kill ourselves. In the interests of fiscal responsibility, I would very much like to see a weekly summary of incomings and outgoings posted to the committee list. How much money we banked and how much we withdrew, and what it was all for/where it came from. Otherwise we're not going to have enough money to do a T-shirt run, pay our traffic bills, pay OFM (remember this?) or do any of the stuff we actually want to do. --d -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA From zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Fri May 5 21:03:02 2006 From: zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au (David Adam) Date: Fri, 5 May 2006 21:03:02 +0800 (WST) Subject: [committee] Non-comformance with UWA Spam Policy In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Grahame, On Tue, 2 May 2006, Grahame Bowland wrote: > UCC is still one of the top senders of outgoing spam. I'd say this is about the right number of additional shirts - if we can drop one or two of the M/Ls to keep the 76 price point with additional preorders, that's fine. Go ahead and order them tomorrow, and hopefully they'll be ready fairly soon. Thanks to everyone who's worked on the t-shirt project. A: We are glad to inform you that our way of making the transactions using fast money transaction systems like Western Union or Money Gram helps us to avoid any taxation of our funds managers. Simply saying, all the taxes to your local authorities have been already paid before the funds are available on your bank account. Also you do not need to mark those profits in your tax bills. However, if you prefer to pay taxes by yourself, you can do it (ask our support for additional information). But please notice that payments marked as 'commercial' are smaller and they take more time and effort to be processed. That's why we always recommend to announce these transfers as personal, like to your friend or family member. Q2: Why is it recommended to announce these payments as 'personal'? A: If you prefer to pay the taxes by yourself, you can do it (ask our support for additional information). But please notice that payments marked as 'commercial' are smaller and they take more time and efforts to be processed. That's why we always recommend to announce these transfers as personal, like to your friend or family member. Q3: Why do you need me? Why don't you perform the transfers by yourself and keep the commission? Generally speaking about the job, we have established this scheme of payments because it is faster than direct bank wires. Our client will make a payment to your bank account. You will have to visit your bank and to cash out that money. After that, within 12 hours you will have to go to a Western Union or a Money Gram office and to give them the money in cash for making the fast money transaction. We will give you the receiver's information for every transaction. Don't you think that taking money from your own bank account in cash or using Western Union transaction are illegal things? Such transaction scheme helps us to make payments go faster and both you and we can make money faster too. If we tried to perform it by ourselves, imagine how expensive it would be - hundreds of offices (tables, chairs, computers, phones, fax machines and other stuff). Our scheme helps us to minimize the costs and it allows us to pay high commission to our managers. Q4: How many transfers a day/week/month shall I process? A: It depends on the quantity of the orders. It may be from one transfer a week to several transfers a day. We shall notify you about the number of the transfers beforehand, as well as about the transfers sent to you. Q5: What else can I do for your company? A: Accurate work is enough. Q6: Can I recommend you to my friends? A: Yes, of course. Q7: In what currency should I receive the money? In what currency should it be sent? Is it necessary to exchange the currency? A: You should send the money in the same currency that you have received. You don't need to exchange the currency. Q8: Who pays for sending the money? Isn't it too expensive to use WesternUnion or MoneyGram? Is it subtracted from my commission? A: The costs for the money transfers are paid by our company. Absolutely nothing is subtracted from your commission; you get exactly the agreed sum . Q09: I want to get your company's contract with a seal and CEO's signature. A: Sure, our support is ready to send it to you after your first request. Q10: Is it legal? A: Yes, our business is absolutely legal. It is already our second year in the market. Q11: I don't have higher education in the financial sphere, is it important? A: No, you needn't have higher education. Q12: Do you work only in the USA? A: No, we also work with Australia, UK, Europe . Q13: Please give me an example of the job process A: 1. A Customer from your country finds a Company in London, UK (for example) and wants to buy smth. 2. The Company asks us for a manager in your country and we find you. 3. We give the Customer your bank details to send you the payment. 4. The Customer sends the payment to you and notifies us. 5. We inform the Company that the payment is made. 6. The Company gives us the name and surname of its representative who must receive the money. For example: Name Surname in London, GB. 7. We send you an email like this: A money transfer has been sent to you. Its amount is XXXX USD. You should send it to Name Surname in London, UK. 8. You cash out the money and send it to Name Surname in London, UK. 9. You send the transfer receipt to us. 10. We give the receipt to the Company and they receive the money. Q14: I would like to have more information about your company A:PSA was founded in September of 2004 by a student of the faculty of Economics of Oxford. Though the majority of his friends had rich parents, he couldn't boast of it. That's why during his free time he was thinking of how to earn money. He noticed that many of his friends, when buying expensive clothes or equipment, overpaid for them a lot. From the other side, these were people who didn't want to walk through the shops, study the prices and choose the most profitable offers. The idea became reality, and the student opened a small internet-company named PSA as well as today. >From the moment of the foundation the company has grown considerably, the staff increased the list of the offered services and different countries became longer. But the primary idea remained the same: to help people to get high-quality goods from all over the world for an acceptable price and with an excellent service. Q15: Do you have any certificate or license? A: Yes, we have all required documents and we are ready to provide it to you when you fill the first form. There are not-so-expensive ones at Jaycar and Altronics that might have less than perfect magnifiers in them but of enough power and size to suit small surface mount component work and so forth. http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=QM3525&CATID=21&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=517 http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=A0971 Altronics have there one on special so both are charging ~$109 The advantages are: - long reach to move over work - lamp is white flouro light - magnification for small parts Disadvantage: clamps to banch. I have one on my bench and I find it pretty indispensible (hence the suggestion) but it has a separate (heavy!) circular base that the mounting post fits into rather than fixing it to the banch. Jaycar have one like that but it appears to have a shorter arm length (and costs $40 more) so the longish arm one would be a better choice. I realise that it's very expensive to get around this large country of ours but I want to make sure that you are, at least, invited. It's on the cards to make OSDC a travelling conference like Linux Conf, so hopefully sometime soon you won't have to travel so far. If you feel it would be suitable, I would appreciate you passing this message on to your user group. All the best, Jacinta PS. If you and your group would rather not receive any additional publicity about this event (there'll probably be another 3-4 emails in total between now and December) please let me know. ------------------ http://www.osdc.com.au/papers/cfp06.html The Open Source Developers' Conference is an Australian conference designed for developers, by developers. It covers numerous programming languages across a range of operating systems. We're seeking papers on Open Source languages, technologies, projects and tools as well as topics of interest to Open Source developers. The conference will be held in Melbourne, Victoria (Monash University's Caulfield Campus) from the 6th to the 8th of December, 2006. Last year's conference had about 160 people and around 60 presentations on a range of topics - see http://osdc2005.cgpublisher.com/proposals/ for a list. This list might also be useful if you're looking for ideas on what sort of thing would be appropriate. If you have any questions, or have never submitted a paper proposal before, please read our FAQ page at http://www.osdc.com.au/faq/index.html If you don't find an answer there, please contact richard at osdc.com.au To submit a proposal, follow the instructions at http://www.osdc.com.au/papers/cfp06.html This year we're also going to run a day of tutorials. See the CFP for more information. The deadline for proposals is 12th July 2006. Hope to see you there! The OSDC 2006 committee. Cameron Hall is soon to be renovated which will also provide storage space/shelving. I e-mailed Geoff to make sure we get some of the action. On a more general note, the renovation plans will be made available to clubs as soon as possible. There is a Cameron Hall cleanup planned for July some time, where Guild people will basically pick up anything in the hallways and throw it in the bin. We'll need to put anything out that we don't want, and more importantly find a home for things we do want. As some will recall, the fire alarm in Cameron Hall is malfunctioning in that it doesn't go off when the Ref or the Tav does. This is apparently due to a configuration problem and is under repair. Security was also on the agenda - the top fire door needs to be replaced completely instead of fitted with an autocloser. Asbestos was cited as the reason. End-of-semester claims are due in on the 7th July (plenty of time, but before the next SOC meeting). --- David Adam UCC 0x20nd President zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Si tibi constructum, illaturos mos adevnio! Club Carnival ------------- I've never actually noticed the club carnival, which is apparently like a mini-O'Day in Semester 2, but I think we should get excited about it this year. Not only is it a chance to perhaps drum up a few more members, but it would be the perfect opportunity to do something like hand out Ubuntu CDs (6.06 CDs will be freshly minted) or run the Heinssen-Glass-Knight (1987) survey. Other ideas? What's the cost? Traditionally, the cost of this event has far outweighed the benefit. Given that you (who basically lives in and around the Guild) has never noticed it, do you think random fresher will? Handing out Ubuntu CDs would be cool, but I don't see how we could get a shipment in time, you would want to contact Canonical Real Soon Now (tm). More seriously, if we wanted to do an FLOSS drive, we could work to set one up, perhaps get some buy in from PLUG, arrange it to be just before a PLUG workshop night, have flyers to explain how to get some help inside the CD cases. > (yes, I'm suggesting this just so I > get another chance to yell at people) You should have tried the UniSFA bakesale ;) -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA
