Dear Matt
Thank you for your email and for taking the trouble to check on the
use of the term "university" within the name of your club.

Section 6 of the WA Higher Education Act 2004 refers to the protection
of titles and awards (see
http://www.slp.wa.gov.au/legislation/statutes.nsf/main_mrtitle_420_homepage.html).
Clearly you are not misrepresenting the term and the club will not be
an education institution per se.

Good luck with the new constitution.

regards

Christine Gammon

Subject: Use of reserved word "University" - University Computer Club

Good morning Christine,

Your colleague provided me with your email address this morning via
telephone and advised me to write to you regarding the use of the word
University, a reserved word in the name for the name of our soon to be
incorporated association.

The University Computer Club (UCC) has a proud and long standing
history at the University of Western Australia as a Guild of
Undergraduates affiliated club. Founded in 1974, the club and its
members original gathered to gain access to one of the few
supercomputers available at the time in Western Australia. Since, the
club has grown to have 168 members ranging from first year students
through to lecturers and graduates of the University.

The clubs current aims are:

1. The advancements of Computer Science
2. To co-operate with all bodies of similar aims 3. The club shall not
transmit any monies or grants to any person or body by way of gift

The wording of this is planned to change slightly as we draft our new
constitution to meet the Schedule 1 requirements of the Associations
Act, but in general the objects of the club will remain the same.

Please let me know if you require any further information from me to
process this request for consideration to use the word University and
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind Regards,
Matt Didcoe
President | University Computer Club
