In their minds, yes - and that's the idea. We have a markup on drinks and
snacks of approx 40%, so the goods cost to the club is ~$3.60. We also get
~$1.90 back from the guild per guild member, so in reality a new member
costs us ~$1.70. The number of guild members we have also factors into
how much we get in semester 1 and 2 soc grants, so the more members the
merrier. A non-guild fresher still pays $10, so nothing lost there.
On the other hand, I firmly believe that the losses can be more than
offset by freshers who stick around longer. $5 will be enough of an
incentive to get freshers to sign up, go up to the clubroom, activate
their accounts, and then come back more than once. We get them hooked so
to speak.
