Whilst I tend to be of the opinion "screw the policies we have a
constitution", I think the committee can decide to follow policies
outside the constitution, and such things do have their place.
For those new to policy related drama:
Constitution: https://www.ucc.asn.au/infobase/policies/const.ucc
Door Policy: https://www.ucc.asn.au/infobase/policies/door.ucc
Neither of these mention the 2/3 votes rule.
What does, is the group admission guidelines:
https://www.ucc.asn.au/infobase/policies/guidelines.ucc
What is annoying and not clear from the minutes is the manner in which
the "policy" was used to fail this motion after it had been pronounced
"passed", despite the fact that the committee present seemed to
unanimously agree that it was a stupid policy. And then there were the
familiar comments about it being "rewritten".
If you think it's a stupid policy I would strongly suggest you just
don't follow it. It's on a page that is specifically titled
"guidelines". You may as well "rewrite" it with the title "Pirate's
Code" and be done.
By the way, 2/3 of 8 is 5 and 1/3, so assuming you round up to 6, you're
actually requiring 75% majority which makes this policy even more stupid.
Also, since 2013 abstains have been counted as against in committee
votes, but not being physically present has been counted as an abstain
(ie: not included in the total).
So, 4/6 is 2/3 and the motion would pass.
Or if "abstain" meant what it actually means, 4/5 > 2/3 and the motion
would pass.
Yours totally confused,
