Further, camp runs in the middle of winter, and lakes are cold.
As for "alternate camp activities" - I applaud you trying to broaden the
camp to include tech talks and such, and it's what I tried to do for a few
years after we resurrected the camp. Unfortunately, this turned out to be
really hard, largely because the camp requires minimum numbers to run (due
to venue costs), meaning that gaming had to be a major part of it in order
for the event to run at all. It has been a couple of years since I've been
to camp, but in the last year I went it had basically become just a big
LANing weekend. Events like RFLAN do this a lot better. I don't see an
easy way of changing this in the current camp format - UCC camp doesn't
lend itself very well to tech talks or hacking style events. Hacking style
events are particularly hard to run due to the lack of tools, benches, and
computers with the appropriate software. Tech talks tend not to happen
because most of the people who can give them aren't at the camp.
What I've been pondering for some time is a ticketed, BarCamp style event,
run over a weekend (preferably a long weekend) in the UCC clubroom and the
loft. We could have a decent amount of workshops - long enough to actually
learn and accomplish something. Scheduled tech talks throughout the
weekend, with other projects hacking throughout the day. People go home at
night, keeping accomodation and food costs low. If only 10 people come,
this is not a problem. Ticket prices could cover lunches, membership for
anyone who comes and is not a member, and maybe a cheap dev board or other
hardware. Would anyone be willing to pursue such an event?
Thoughts/comments?
