April 2022
Director's Update

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the inaugural news flash for the UWA Data Institute (DI). Hope you are staying safe and starting the first semester of 2022 well.
It has been an exciting start since the launch of the DI at the end of October 2021. With strong support by founding sponsors (BCGGamma, IMDEX and WiPro) and other industry and government stakeholders, the DI started building linkages between UWA researchers/students and industry stakeholders. We hosted an industry roundtable discussion that resulted in the publication of a white paper named "What is standing between you and the data you need to make decisions" that describes challenges that industry are facing in their data-driven decisions and the use of data science, and how the DI can address those challenges. We also facilitated the recruitment of two industry internships in data science over the summer break that resulted with one gaining employment. We have also signed on an industry PhD scholarship and held a targeted workshop with a government agency.
The university-wide information briefing on the Data Institute was held in December 2021 and we have now established a member database for communication of events, grant opportunities and other information that is relevant and beneficial to our members.
One of the main focuses for the past six months was to build strategies and mapping activities to meet the three pillars of the DI, namely 'Data Intensive Industry Gateway', 'Knowledge Transfer' and 'Collective Research Impact'. Our Research Committee that comprises representatives from 15 different research clusters across UWA ,and the Board comprising senior academics and industry representatives, worked together to map the activity plans for 2022.
UWA DI will host a Data-Driven Decision (D3) Seminar Series to offer opportunities for cross-industry pollination of data science advances, showcase UWA research and networking. The D3 series will include the inaugural seminar in April, a conference in July, and an industry panel discussion and networking in December. In addition, various clusters across campus will showcase their data science research activities in May, June, August, September, October and November.
Thank you for your ongoing contribution, feedback and willingness to engage with UWA DI. We have started an exciting journey. I very much look forward to sharing this journey with you all to a successful and prosperous future.

Professor Eun-Jung Holden
Director, UWA Data Institute

Medical Physics
The Medical Physics program, which currently has 32 enrolled Masters students and 8 enrolled PhD students, focusses on the safe and efficacious delivery of radiotherapy treatments to cancer patients. Our group has a number of different research areas, ranging from the use of specialised 3D printing techniques to enhance radiotherapy treatment procedures, to implementing state-of-the-art artificial intelligence methods for automated detection and characterisation of tumours in patients. Some of our pioneering research has already been implemented clinically at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, where our group is based. While varied in nature, all of our research is geared towards the one primary goal; maximising patient outcomes for all manner of pernicious cancer types.
