Dear University of Western Australia Student Clubs, Societies, and Associations,
My name is Dr Stephanie Hardacre and I am co-leading an Australian Research Council Discovery Indigenous-funded project<https://aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpsychology.anu.edu.au%2Fresearch%2Fprojects%2Fputting-%25E2%2580%2598social%25E2%2580%2599-back-social-media-examining-impacts-online-social-integration&data=05%7C01%7CStephanie.Hardacre%40anu.edu.au%7Cfcacbdadbf884eef09bf08da54da62e6%7Ce37d725cab5c46249ae5f0533e486437%7C0%7C0%7C637915594919026797%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=De%2BRCk%2FwgE3DIhfrovI5KemkU3k5fUwaMjDXvCW5V%2F0%3D&reserved=0> out of the Australian National University, alongside Dr Olivia Evans (ANU), Dr Lillian Smyth (ANU), A/Prof Tegan Cruwys (ANU), Prof Mark Rubin (Durham University, UK), and Prof Maria Raciti (University of the Sunshine Coast). Our team has been working on a new research study and we would appreciate your help in recruiting a wider sample of Australian undergraduate students.
Our goal with this study is to understand the relationships between undergraduate students' experiences and relationships at university, their use of social media, and their mental health and wellbeing. In particular, we want to understand the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had and will continue to have on students' social integration at university, and start building online solutions to improving student social integration and mental health. To do so we are asking students to complete a 15-30 minute online survey about their experiences, with the opportunity to enter a prize draw with at least a 1 in 10 chance of winning a $30 eGift certificate. This research has been approved by the ANU Human Research Ethics Committee (Protocol 2021/817).
If you agree to help with recruitment, this would involve you distributing the survey link to your undergraduate student population during Semester 2 2022 from early August to early November. Universities we have worked with in the past have done so via mass email, posting announcements to their Online Learning Management System (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, Wattle), having course coordinators inform students during lectures, posting to their university-affiliated social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.), printing out posters and placing around university grounds, and emailing society/club members. We are happy to do whatever we can to assist in this process.
In return, we will provide a snapshot of results relating to your university student population, as well as access to any publications or reports arising from the study. More broadly, this research will be used to inform the development of a cost-effective and scalable method of increasing university students' social integration and improving their mental health, with far-reaching benefits across universities in Australia.
Attached is a Participant Information Sheet for further information on the study, as well as the ethics approval and a recruitment poster. Please let me know if you have any questions.
I look forward to hearing from you.
All the best,
Stephanie
