really odd 0.45 startup behavior

hi matt -- thanks -- this helps a lot.  i clearly need to
read up on entropy and randomness.  i hadn't caught the
change from /dev/urandom to /dev/random in 0.45.

perhaps a log message on return from /dev/random, if it
blocked for more than N seconds?  that would at least give
a clue as to where the time is going.
