You could take a look at the work William Welch did on
improving Dropbear Microblaze performance, see
the thread http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.network.ssh.dropbear/1350/focus=1359
and 
https://github.com/bvwelch/dropbear (though I'm not sure if
that branch is complete).

What clock speed and device is it, out of interest?
