They are there for functionality, I was trying to make the site easier to navigate.
But if div-popups are out of style, you should let people know.

You'll notice that all those websites use drop-down menus, not side-popup menus which are a lot harder to use, because the mouse has to stay within a small vertical area while moving to the pop-up bit, instead of a wide horizontal area. And you then have to change mouse direction to select, instead of just continuing down. Did you learn anything in HCI?
