Perhaps a more constructive piece of advise would be "Let's write something that combines web 2.0 style forums and mailing lists" and integrate the two. Much like Google Groups[/url:1b4ssaa2].

Pros:[/size:1b4ssaa2]
[*:1b4ssaa2]It's an interesting programming topic that could get people involved in development, not just gaming.[/*:m:1b4ssaa2]
[*:1b4ssaa2]It gives us an up-to-date web interface which is what those hip young Internet people expect.[/*:m:1b4ssaa2]
[*:1b4ssaa2]It keeps the old guard happy by continuing the mailing list, albeit in a new form.[/*:m:1b4ssaa2][/list:o:1b4ssaa2]
Cons:[/size:1b4ssaa2]
[list:1b4ssaa2][*:1b4ssaa2]More spam - Solution: only subscribe to wanted forums/lists. Limit some forums (like announcements) to serious topics only. Moderate.[/*:m:1b4ssaa2]
[*:1b4ssaa2]Stupid people - Solution: ban them.[/*:m:1b4ssaa2]
[*:1b4ssaa2]Publishing emails online for harvesting - Solution: obfuscation.[/*:m:1b4ssaa2]
[*:1b4ssaa2]Forum spam - Solution: akistmet[/url:1b4ssaa2].[/*:m:1b4ssaa2][/list:u:1b4ssaa2]
Also: I'm surprised this doesn't use phpBB 3[/url:1b4ssaa2] at least, if not a non-php solution... It's quite stable and much more featureful.
