Years ago when I was hacking mutt, freading and fwriting didn't always
update the attributes of the file.  Sometimes, but not always.  My
workaround was to call utime() as required.

Me neither, but I'd like to have that option.  I'd appreciate being
able to put my confidence in a networked filesystem.
