Fixed!

Thanks, Angus - he suggested a couple of config entries
("AuthPamAuthoritative on" and "PersistentPasswd off").
PersistentPasswd was the killer - the docs mention that it doesn't work
with NIS, but I guess the Debian build enables it by default, now.
AuthPamAuthoritative looked sensible, so I added that as well.
