It can, can't it? At least with NFSv3?

To completely change the subject, NFSv4 sounds really cool. It can do all
sorts of async fun things (eg: sending multiple requests before and responses
are recieved). Martin Pool and Tridge were working on it for VA, but given
that VA just fired Ted Tso, I'm not sure if Martin and Tridge are still 
there :-(
