Would something like:

passwd: files ldap [UNAVAIL=return]
group:  files ldap [UNAVAIL=return]

or

passwd: files ldap [NOTFOUND=return]
group:  files ldap [NOTFOUND=return]

in /etc/nsswitch.conf be appropriate? Not sure which is applicable though.
