Yep, they were initially unable to be added:

# mdadm /dev/md1 --add /dev/sdj1
mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdj1: Device or resource busy

This is because multipath snarfed them:

# multipath -l
360060160879a1000d8c0be44a3cfdf11 dm-1 DGC,RAID 10
size=1.2T features='1 queue_if_no_path' hwhandler='1 emc' wp=rw
|-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=-1 status=active
| `- 5:0:0:0 sda 8:0   active undef running
`-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=-1 status=enabled
  `- 5:0:1:0 sdc 8:32  active undef running
SSEAGATE ST3146707LC    3KS1TK41 dm-4 SEAGATE,ST3146707LC
size=137G features='0' hwhandler='0' wp=rw
`-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=-1 status=active
  `- 7:0:0:0 sdj 8:144 active undef running
360060160879a1000ceacdb257c02e011 dm-2 DGC,RAID 1
size=50G features='1 queue_if_no_path' hwhandler='1 emc' wp=rw
|-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=-1 status=active
| `- 5:0:0:1 sdb 8:16  active undef running
`-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=-1 status=enabled
  `- 5:0:1:1 sdd 8:48  active undef running
SSEAGATE ST3146807LC    3HY9BZG2 dm-3 SEAGATE,ST3146807LC
size=137G features='0' hwhandler='0' wp=rw
`-+- policy='round-robin 0' prio=-1 status=active
  `- 7:0:3:0 sdg 8:96  active undef running

The trick is to remove them with dmsetup:

# dmsetup remove /dev/mapper/SSEAGATE\ ST3146707LC\ \ \ \ 3KS1TK41
# dmsetup remove /dev/mapper/SSEAGATE\ ST3146807LC\ \ \ \ 3HY9BZG2

Then the raw disk devices could be added back to the RAID array.
