I looked at smartctl for the drive (when it was still responsive) and it hadn't logged any failed reads in the smart log, so I wonder if it's the cable or enclosure. Can someone who is around the clubroom take a look at it? Try another slot if available, swap the cable etc. Otherwise I guess we need a new disk. Apparently it's been crashing fairly regularly, "once per game" being the description I was given. Another issue that has just been brought to my attention is that because Catfish is running the "new experimental windows domain", new members added after the implementation of said domain can't login, and old members who have not signed up this year (and subsequently had their accounts locked) can still log in to this machine. It seems weird to me that it hasn't been made a priority to fix this. Cheers, [BIG] P.S. I swapped the non-16:9 silver/grey rimmed monitor that was on Corydoras with a monitor I found in the corner by Combtail (labelled "To play ET: /usr/local/bin/et-sdl-sound"). If anybody has a reasonable problem with this swap just let me know and I'll swap them back. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... No wheel/GID 0 accounts yet of course, but after Zack reset his password (with "smbpasswd -U coffee" on samson); then * ssh logins to the test Linux Mint VM 130.95.13.3 worked fine * mdm graphical logins failed with "The system administrator has disabled access to the system" * lightdm wouldn't start * xdm graphical logins worked nicely! We have wanted 10G for many years now, but we've never had enough extra cash available. The price has also come down a fair bit in the last couple of years. A 10G switch would allow us to improve the connectivity between our storage and our VM hosts (molmol, maltair, medico, loveday), and allow us to meaningfully experiment with clustered storage. [TRS] suggested an Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch16 - XG, available for around $870 from http://www.citytechnology.com.au/store/edgeswitch-fiber-es-16-xg-10gig-rj45-sfp-plus-ubiquiti-australia or http://ubwh.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=475 The ubiquiti switch has 4 RJ-45 ports and 12 SFP+ ports. If we want to use the SFP+ ports, we would have to buy some 10G direct-attach-copper (DAC) cables at around $100 per cable. We may or may not have to use SFP+ yet, depending on which 10G cards we get for the servers - though with only 4 RJ-45 ports and the need for an uplink on at least one of those ports, I suspect we will need at least one or two. Another option I found, which admittedly gives us fewer total ports, is something like this, which has all RJ-45 ports, and is only around $150 more expensive: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/netgear-prosafe-xs708t-8-port-10-gigabit-ethernet-smart-managed-switch-ab82897 Now I don't know a great deal about 10G switching and what is economical/good. Do others have any opinions/advice/thoughts on this? Medico - has a stick of ECC ram with a single bit error. The machine has been beeping for some time because of this. I would also like to get a 500G SSD for each of the three hosts, so that we can set up ceph and have FAST clustered local storage on each host. This will allow us to run core servers (and especially machines hosting databases) while also allowing us to move those machines around between hosts as necessary. Currently mussel is hosted locally on maltair, but its space is limited and we have to shut it down to move it to another host. Having the extra space would allow us to virtualise mooneye as well, rather than buying a whole new server.
