[tech] new .au domain for websites

Hi,

>From 24 March 2022, Australian companies and organisations will be able to apply or buy a new domain for websites: .au

What is it?

  *   A domain name ending in .au signifies that the person or organisation using it has a connection or operations in Australia.
  *   There are two types of .au namespaces: open and closed.
  *   Open .au namespaces are those in which the public can register names, provided they are eligible. Current open .au namespaces are:

-          com.au

-          edu.au

-          net.au

-          org.au

-          asn.au

-          id.au

-          and from 24 March 2022, .au - this domain will be open to anyone with a connection to Australia

  *   Registrants who have pre-existing names in the .au namespace (e.g., .com.au, .net.au, .org.au. .edu.au) will be able to apply to obtain the matching .au direct name, provided they apply for it.
  *   The .au direct name will be allocated according to the .au direct priority allocation process.

Why should you care?

  *   Protecting your brand and site traffic:
-          Influence the audience perception of your brand - although Google have confirmed that using alternative top-level domains do not directly affect a website's search rankings, they might influence the audience's perception of a brand - therefore affecting the brand's click-through rate.
-          Limit the risk of having to buy the domain from others who could have purchase the domain first (which can be costly).
-          Limit the risk of others purchasing the domain and setting up phishing websites, stealing traffic from users who thought they were visiting your site.

  *   Confirm with the department responsible for the purchase of domains within your organisation that the application for the .au domain is submitted as soon as possible if you'd like to secure the .au domain.   If you current domain ends in uwa.edu.au you don't need to do anything - we'll manage this for you.
