Hi fellow university computing group execs,

I am one of 2 VPs of
Tech at the Computer Science Undergraduate Association at UC Berkeley,
the oldest CS group on campus, a social club that has waxed and waned
since the '70s.

I would like to form an arrangement in which
several groups incrementally back up home directories to each other via
an agreed-upon system. Could I ask about how much space user homedirs
currently take up and what filesystem you use, in addition to your
thoughts about this plan?

In the interest of preserving precious
alumni data, it is important to follow all aspects of 3-2-1 backups.
Offsite needs to be done properly! CSUA currently lives in a strange
niche: the University took away free Box subscriptions years ago, and on
the other hand, paying for it ourselves is not worth it, given the
amount of user data (2TB in homedirs, 9TB total) we currently have (as
opposed to our OCF brethren, which does use a paid backup provider) and our budget.

I
am aware that many execs' terms will end soon, but I am fine with
planning being done ASAP, and implementation of this plan should begin
with new execs coming in immediately with the fall semester (or
quarter).

Above all, I hope to deepen connections between computing groups. I am looking forward to how this goes in the next few months.

Best Regards,
Ethan Hu
Berkeley CSUA Spring 2024 Co-VP of Technology
