From davyd at madeley.id.au Fri May 5 00:28:52 2006 From: davyd at madeley.id.au (Davyd Madeley) Date: Fri, 05 May 2006 00:28:52 +0800 Subject: [ucc-announce] UCC Camp starts this (Friday) evening! Message-ID: <1146760132.9754.11.camel@frobisher.madeley.id.au> For those of you coming to UCC Camp, don't forget that it is this weekend. If you need directions, you can get them from the website: http://camp.ucc.asn.au/ http://camp.ucc.asn.au/driving.html UCC Camp does not actually involve any tents, but you will still need to bring stuff like a sleeping bag. If you need a list of things not to forget, this list may be helpful: http://camp.ucc.asn.au/stuff_to_bring.html If you really, really wanted to go to UCC Camp, but forgot to register. There is still (some) time. Email camp at ucc.asn.au ASAP, but understand that we can't give you any food. If you want to come down for only a fraction of the time, that will be ok, we can offer a discount if you're not going to be sleeping there. The UCC is running this event at a loss to make it affordable for members, if you don't show your support this year, it might not happen next year. --Davyd Madeley UCC Secretary, 2006 _________________ < Only @ UCC Camp > ----------------- \ _ \ (_) \ ^__^ / \ \ (oo)\_____/_\ \ (__)\ ) / ||----w (( || ||>> -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA From davyd at madeley.id.au Fri May 5 20:32:34 2006 From: davyd at madeley.id.au (Davyd Madeley) Date: Fri, 05 May 2006 20:32:34 +0800 Subject: [ucc-announce] UCC Camp CANCELLED Message-ID: <1146832355.9754.39.camel@frobisher.madeley.id.au> I regretfully inform you all that UCC Camp has been cancelled due to lack of attendance. We apologise if this has in some way made a mess of your plans. --Davyd Madeley UCC Secretary, 2006 -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA From davyd at madeley.id.au Wed May 10 00:18:09 2006 From: davyd at madeley.id.au (Davyd Madeley) Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 00:18:09 +0800 Subject: [ucc-announce] UCC News (and Shenton Park Cleanup Announcement) Message-ID: <1147191490.19903.68.camel@frobisher.madeley.id.au> Ladies and Gentlemen, please stay tuned for... _ _ ____ ____ _ _ | | | |/ ___/ ___| | \ | | _____ _____ | | | | | | | | \| |/ _ \ \ /\ / / __| | |_| | |__| |___ | |\ | __/\ V V /\__ \ \___/ \____\____| |_| \_|\___| \_/\_/ |___/ This fortnight in UCC News: ====================== Shenton Park Cleanup ====================== As you may (or may not) know: we have to get all of our shit out of Shenton Park. Every single last bit of it. The UCC committee are looking for volunteers to come and help them get it all back to Cameron Hall. Some of it we simply won't be able to continue to store, so it will be chucked out if you don't rescue it. Helpers are meeting downstairs below the UCC at 12pm THIS SATURDAY. If you have a trailer or a ute, please feel free to bring it. We have a heap of stuff to cart back to HQ. This is the last chance for anyone to see the Shenton Park facility and what we have (had) stored there. We hope we'll see you there. ================= Mail Forwarding ================= To comply with UWA ITS policies, we've changed our mail server setup a little bit. Anyone who is forwarding their UCC mail to another address will notice we're not forwarding any mail that's labelled as spam by the central UWA filter - this is probably a good thing, but it does occasionally make mistakes. People using procmail should check that their procmailrc files do not forward anything tagged as spam by ITS to non-UCC addresses - the management scripts used by ITS flag even on-site mail forwarding. =============== Murphy's Lore =============== Murphy's Lore is UCC's venerable newsletter. A team of dedicated editors has gotten together to restart Murphy's Lore and is hoping to get an issue out in this semester. If you think you could write something for Murphy's Lore (have you got a project you're working on, or a rant that you want to have) we'll take absolutely everything. Here are some broad example topics: - Computer Programming - Electronics - Science - The Interweb - Tips'n'Tricks for System Administration - Reviews of Games or Books We've already got several submissions, but we still need more. If you've been sitting on your hands, get writing now! This is a great way to improve your writing for that inevitable thesis or your chance to start that IT journalism career. We'll really take anything that is sent to us (as long as you've not ripped it off some other poor sod). To find out more information subscribe to the lore list: http://lists.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/lore ======== Events ======== Weekly pizza is still on. Just because it's gotten a bit cold out, doesn't mean you can't come scoff pizza with us on a Friday night. Ordering usually happens by 7pm and is often enjoyed with random projects, and games of ET. Freshers who go home early due to lack of transport should get in touch with someone (eg. the fresher rep) to see if we can't figure out how to get people home (assuming you don't live in Kalamunda, if that's the case, you're stuffed, I'm afraid). Coming up soon are UCC::Lan 2 (right before exams) and the Zone3-921 (right after exams). More details Real Soon Now (tm). There are rumours of a joint UniSFA-UCC quiz night in second semester: trivia buffs stay tuned. ============ Powercords ============ If you know where our long power cords (extension cables) are, we would love to know too. Drop us a line, or if you're really embarrassed that you nicked them without telling anyone, discrete returns will also be accepted. ========== T-Shirts ========== After 4 years, the UCC has finally gotten it's act together to do a new T-shirt design. We're still sorting out prices and so forth, but we hope to start taking preorders within the week. Again, more details as they come to hand. - ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ - You have been reading UCC News, a fortnightly news source for UCC members. If you would like to help compiling articles for UCC News, please submit them to the UCC secretary before the UCC committee meeting every second Tuesday. -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA From zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Fri May 12 22:52:20 2006 From: zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au (David Adam) Date: Fri, 12 May 2006 22:52:20 +0800 (WST) Subject: [ucc-announce] UCC Shenton Park Cleanup in 13.25 hours Message-ID: Just a final reminder: The UCC storage area at UWA's McGillivray facility is being cleaned up and cleaned out tomorrow. *ahem* It's all got to go in this absolutely final fire-hazard sale, we'll be literally giving stuff away! Our prices couldn't get any lower!! Bring your trailers, bring your caravans, bring your twin-rotor cargo helicopters! We're slashing prices not tyres, and it's all got to go! And that's not all - if you're walking, if you're riding, if you're busing it to UCC, then we have got the deal for you - plenty of transport heading towards Shenton Park from the clubroom AND back again. Roomy, comfy and some quite sane drivers! The time is right - at 12 midday tomorrow, at the UCC Clubrooms in Crawley! Backed by an absolute promise that the T-shirt contains now cowsex, all T-shirts will cost $25 (but if we get enough preorders, we can drop the price). You can see the design, find out about sizing and preorder from the web: http://www.ucc.asn.au/t-shirts.ucc For the grrls, fitted Tees are available, but by preorder only. In fact, we're only going to stock limited numbers and sizes anyway, so we really recommend you preorder to make sure you get what you want. As an extra incentive, one lucky person who preorders their T-shirt will receive it FREE OF CHARGE. Preorders close on the 24th of May. NB. preordering a T-shirt is an agreement that you will buy the T-shirt. The UCC cannot guarantee the safety and continual well being of people who don't pay for preordered T-shirts. For Eastern States/Overseas UCCans, we will happily mail T-shirts by Australia Post. You need to pay for shipping. Dispense would be the best method for doing this, but other payment methods can be negotiated (contact the committee). What are you all waiting for? Preorder your T-shirt today: http://www.ucc.asn.au/t-shirts.ucc --Davyd Madeley UCC Secretary, 2006 -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA From davyd at madeley.id.au Tue May 23 23:15:28 2006 From: davyd at madeley.id.au (Davyd Madeley) Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 23:15:28 +0800 Subject: [ucc-announce] UCC News (t-shirts, UCC LAN, Zone3 and more) Message-ID: <20060523151528.GA21828@bridgewayconsulting.com.au> Ladies and Gentlemen, this is UCC News... ========== T-Shirts ========== We are still collecting preorders for the 2006 UCC T-shirt. http://www.ucc.asn.au/t-shirts.ucc You have until THURSDAY to preorder one. We're not going to order that many extras, so if you want one preorder it. If you're worried about how you're going to each and afford it, then contact the committee to discuss a payment plan. Also, everyone who preorders goes into the draw to win their T-shirt for free. ========== UCC::LAN ========== UCC LAN is happening this weekend! Starting from 3pm Saturday and going until Sunday morning. As usual, it is free for members and $5 for your friends (or get them to join). http://www.ucc.asn.au/infobase/events/ =========== Zone3 921 =========== The UCC traditionally holds a Midnight2Dawn for people to blast away the post-exam stress, but this year it's a 9pm till 1am. Come play "laser tag", the popular game that is sweeping the world with your friends. Fear not, most UCCans are generally too unfit to be too good at this game. We'll bring "portable dispense" for those who get too puffed. The cost is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. It is happening on Saturday June 24 at Zone3 Northbridge (248 Newcastle St). Tell us you're coming online, so we can get an idea of numbers. http://ucc.asn.au/zone3.ucc ================ Spam Filtering ================ Wheel informs us that: UCC's spam filtering is now easier to use. If you want filtered spam to end up in your 'spam' mailbox rather than the main one, make a file '.filter-my-spam' in your home directory. By default this uses UWA's spam filter, which is fairly reliable at letting genuine mail through. If you want better filtering but also more genuine mail tagged as spam, make a file '.filter-my-spam-more'. At some stage we'll be rotating spam mailboxes every month or so, to avoid chewing up disk space - check it every now and then. ====== Lore ====== The Lore team is still accepting submissions (mostly because they're really busy). It's going to go all night and well into tomorrow morning (so don't stress if you can't make it until later in the evening). This is your last chance to blast away some stress before the exam period starts up so come along and have some fun. Remember the LAN is free for UCC members and $5 for non-members (or join the UCC at the event). If you want to be fed pizza, it will cost $5 (we order a selection of pizzas and everybody shares). As well as your computer and yourself, remember to bring a network cable (a blueie) and any power cables you require. If you have spare power strips, bring those too (write your name on them). You won't need any switching hardware, we have that covered. Cameron Hall is smoke free, alcohol free and drug free premises. UCC has a variety of reasonably priced snacks and soft drinks available for purchase throughout the night, however people are welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks. We recommend people bring a bottle of water.
