Welcome to UCC News, the fortnightly excuse for gratituious ASCII art
headers!

In this issue:
* Work experience/research programmers wanted
* Recent event reports
* How to get your account locked
* Wanted: old sound cards

Research Programmers Wanted
=============================
The UCC has been contacted by a local start-up - they are looking for UWA
students who are interested in working part-time for six to eight months
on research projects including advanced computer vision theory and maths,
hardware/software interface systems and processing of large (5,000+ CPU
hours) image processing tasks for large (100,000+ photos) amounts of data.

If you're in need of a final-year project, or some work experience in a
professional environment, this might be the chance to get some cash and
course credit at the same time!

Mr Stuart Nixon will be at the UCC on Friday evening (that's tomorrow)
about 6pm to talk to anyone who's interested - come along and get an idea
of what's expected, even if you're not sure about it.

Recent Events
=============
for those of you who didn't turn up to the Charity Vigil, or who haven't
been paying attention to this list, you'll be proud to hear that the Vigil
raised a record about of money for Stand By Me Youth Service over three
thousand dollars. Well done, and thanks to all who attended - and a
particular thanks to the Vigil committee who put the event together.

Also, we had the very successful UCC 32nd (0x20th) Dinner last Friday
night. Fourty-two UCCans old and new ate, drank, and listened to the
President waffle on for far too long at the beautiful Royal Perth Yacht
Club. Thanks to the Guild for their sponsorship!

Avast! No piracy on our network!
================================

In the last couple of weeks, various club members have had their accounts
suspended for sharing copyright files via their web space. You can read up
on our network policy[1], but the basic message is DON'T DO THIS. Legality
or ethics aside, sharing MP3s or other copyright material from UCC servers
is a really good way to get us in trouble. Particularly if you're then
advertising the fact that the files are there via, say, a blog or
LiveJournal.

You can expect a swift account locking if another member brings this sort
of behaviour to the attention of the Powers That Be.

Got any old sound cards?
========================
< zarquin> "zarquin is looking for any soundcards with a ymf278 chip on
them if you have them spare" :)

Mail zarquin at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au, or head to any gig where they've promised
a 'pirate metal band'.

You've been reading UCC News, the UCC committee's attempt to reduce the
amount of rubbish in your inbox. Has it worked? Only you can be the judge.

Until next fortni
