From davyd at madeley.id.au Wed Feb 7 23:20:14 2007 From: davyd at madeley.id.au (Davyd Madeley) Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2007 23:20:14 +0900 Subject: [ucc-announce] O'Day 2007 :: call for volunteers Message-ID: <20070207142014.GE21056@bridgewayconsulting.com.au> Greetings UCCans! It's almost time for that visit to Officeworks to stack up on discount biros and budget lined paper, which means that its almost time for O'Day. If you've not been with us very long (if that's not the case, you may safely ignore this paragraph), O'Day was that thing you attended on the first Friday before classes began in first semester. That thing were we suckered you out of $5. Well, now it's your turn to sucker someone younger than you out of their money too! O'Day this year is the 23rd of Feb and the UCC stall on James Oval will need person'ing from around 10.30AM till 3.30PM. Drinks are provided throughout the day for people in the sun. The clubroom also needs members to look excited about something or other. There is a page for O'Day organization on the wiki: http://wiki.ucc.asn.au/ODay2007 It would be really great if you could write your name under the section marked __Volunteers__. We'll be writing, editing and proofreading the Freshers' Guide in one hit - this is not actually an unrealistic goal because we're cannabilising the previous Guide. Exactly how we're going to organise this remains to be seen, but if you're bringing a laptop it might be a good idea to put a recent-ish build of Gobby (the collaborative editor) on it. Hopefully, if we have enough hands, we can also put in some quality time with the website. If you'd like to learn how to edit the slightly scary source of the website, or need the right permissions added to your account, there's plenty of out-of-date and nonexistent information on the website. Dinner will happen at around 7pm, and the coke machine will be well-stocked. This is a great way to have a useful impact on new members, so come along and join in the fun. Writers, editors, grammar nuts, layout lovers, HTML gurus, photographers and artists (we need new cover art) will all come in handy. Hope to see you there! In a last ditch effort to make the clubroom vaguely presentable for O'Day, we'd appreciate as many hands as possible on: THURSDAY 22rd FEBRUARY 2007 starting at 5 PM Dinner will be provided for hard workers. Because of the late notice, we'll forgive door members who don't turn up (but please do). We'll also be making final preparations for O'Day, so if you're coming on O'Day it might be a good idea to show up. Finally - if you have a carpet cleaner, or you know where to borrow one (we're not averse to paying a little bit of money) - please e-mail David Adam . The carpet could really do with a clean. 2007 Memberships ---------------- Starting on O'Day this Friday, we'll be accepting payments for memberships in 2007. You traditionally have until shortly after a new committee is elected in March before accounts are locked, but there are no guarantees. Get down to O'Day on February 23rd - we're over on the east side of James Oval, near Unigames and CSSC - or get in to the clubroom any other time. Alternatively, if that's too difficult, you can pay online by credit card through PayPal (you don't need a PayPal account). Check out http://ucc.asn.au/member/2007/ for all the details. If you're a life member, please advise Davyd Madeley of your current postal address so we can send you a membership card. (Yes, we have a list of life members, so don't try and trick us.) ---- You've been reading UCC:News, the newsletter that isn't a CPAN module. O'Day has passed and it's time to renew your UCC membership for 2007. Being a UCC member is the only way to keep your access to UCC facilities such as our computers, tools and library. UCC members in 2007 also get a 5% discount at Nintek for all their computer related requirements (ask a committee member for the discount code). This year there is Paypal available (for those who are not currently in Perth). You must still send us a form, so that we have you on file and don't accidently lock your account. You must be a financial member of the club by the AGM if you wish to vote. Account locking usually takes place some time after the AGM. More information on http://www.ucc.asn.au/member/2007/ For the curious, some statistics from O'Day... 79 people signed up 43 of them were freshers 36 were rejoining members 76% were Guild members The gender split was 86%/14%, which is better than linux.conf.au Regards, --Davyd Madeley UCC Secretary, 2006 -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA From davyd at madeley.id.au Sat Feb 24 11:26:56 2007 From: davyd at madeley.id.au (Davyd Madeley) Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2007 11:26:56 +0900 Subject: [ucc-announce] UCC News (post-O'Day, Feb 2007) Message-ID: <20070224022656.GF8651@bridgewayconsulting.com.au> _____________________________________ / UCC News, more fun than a wholesome \ \ afternoon of cow tipping / ------------------------------------- \ ^__^ \ (oo)\_______ (__)\ )\/\ ||----w | || || The Freshers are now subscribed which means that it's time for another issue of UCC NEWS! If you're getting deja vu from this text, that is because I copied large chunks of it from last year. To all the freshers who signed up this year (you should all be subscribed now), I want to welcome you on behalf of the 2006 UCC committee. These messages are applicable to both new and returning members. ------------------- Computer Accounts ------------------- Only 6 of our new members have signed up for UCC computer accounts. You can't use the UCC computers, networked drink and snack machines, email, &c. without a UCC computer account. Come up to the clubroom to get an account. You will want to ask a wheel or committee member. Wheel members look like this: http://www.ucc.asn.au/infobase/groups/wheel.ucc If you haven't yet found the clubroom, here are some directions: http://www.ucc.asn.au/aboutucc/contact.ucc More on accounts: http://www.ucc.asn.au/services/accounts.ucc -------- Events -------- The events page is looking empty at the moment, because no one has updated it yet, but we do have events coming up in the very near future. All members are invited to attend and welcome the new members into the club. Pizza for new members is FREE, pizza for old members is probably $5. Pizza ordering will happen early, if you're tardy, you may screw up the headcount. The Annual General Meeting is being held on Tuesday March 20th at 1pm (Common Lunch Hour) in the Guild Council Meeting Room (if you don't know where this is, come to the clubroom first). The 2007 committee will be voted in at this meeting and all members are welcome to attend. First year members should attend, especially if they wish to be FRESHER REPRESENTATIVE for the club. An official notice of the AGM and the agenda will appear at the beginning of next month and an agenda for the meeting will be available from Friday the 9th. ------------ Planet UCC ------------ Members with weblogs are welcome to join our Planet. http://planet.ucc.asn.au/ All that is required is a sensible RSS or Atom feed and to contact the Planet Master via planet at ucc.asn.au. === Ok, that's about it for now. If you're interested in more general UCC news, sign up to the ucc at ucc.asn.au mailing list: http://lists.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/ucc Otherwise, I look forward to meeting those of you I haven't met during the next couple of weeks or at the Fresher's Welcome. For those of you new to this whole Uni thing, it's not really that scary, once you stop getting lost. The most important thing is to remember that as well as to learn, you're here to have fun. --Davyd Madeley UCC Secretary, 2006 -- Davyd Madeley http://www.davyd.id.au/ 08B0 341A 0B9B 08BB 2118 C060 2EDD BB4F 5191 6CDA
