Klubroom Kleenup 4.0
====================

With the latest release of Linux's greatest desktop environment, UCC is 
holding a cleanup to get the clubroom looking as shiny as Plastik.

The cleanup is on FEBRUARY 9, 2008 starting at 1 PM.

ALL DOOR MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND, and everyone else is welcome too. 
Pizza will be provided for kontributing kleeners.

We'll be focusing on getting the place clean and tidy for the arrival of 
the 2008 freshers, and on fixing anything that's broken. We will also be 
performing some work on modifying the snack machine to read MIFARE cards 
(UWA student cards and SmartRiders). There will be plenty of Wheel 
members around if you've been needing someone to take a look at your 
account, and all hands will be appreciated.

You may particularly want to attend if you've left anything in the 
clubroom over the summer break, as "if in doubt, throw it out" rules will 
be in effect.


Unscheduled Systems Downtime
============================

In a bizarre series of seemingly unconnected events, some UCC machines 
and services have been temporarily unavailable over the last few weeks. 
Much of this is preciptated due to the failure of an aircon during high 
temperatures, and it's entirely possible that more problems may occur 
before our aircon can be repaired. Stay tuned to the tech@ mailing list 
if you'd like to know what's going on.


Scheduled Systems Downtime
==========================

In conjunction with the cleanup on February 9, Wheel members will be 
shutting down a number of systems and services in order to perform 
maintenance and upgrades.

The following services may be offline for some or all of Februray 9 2008:
  * Martello (primary file server): /home being enlarged, all home
    directories unavailable (impacting member web space)
  * Manbo (secondary file server): file shares being moved to new server,
    /away and /services unavailable (impacting main UCC web space),
    clubroom logins unavailable.

We may also be installing a UPS system so it is possible that the core 
network equipment will need to be restarted but this should not affect 
network service for more than a few minutes.

Help Write The Fresher's Guide
==============================

O'Day is approaching and it's time to start writing the Fresher's Guide.

We're hoping to put it all together on February 16th in the UCC clubroom, 
so if you're interested in writing one of the most important pieces of 
club propaganda come along and help out.

If you can't make it but have some suggestions, you can e-mail them to 
Luke Williams <vp at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au>.
