From zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Tue Apr 7 18:21:38 2009 From: zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au (David Adam) Date: Tue, 7 Apr 2009 18:21:38 +0800 (WST) Subject: [ucc-announce] Events: cleanup, LAN and Movies: Hackers Message-ID: Three coming events! CLUBROOM CLEANUP ================ A cleanup for the clubroom has been declared for Saturday 11 April from 1pm. All door members are expected to attend or send apologies to committee-only at ucc - others are most welcome, and if you're thinking about becoming a door member, attending a cleanup is a good way to show you're interested in maintaining the club environment. UCC::LAN 2009.1 =============== This Easter break, bring your best gaming rig (or any gaming rig) down to the Cameron Hall loft (next to the UCC clubroom) for UCC::LAN! Starting on Saturday 11 April at 5pm, and going through until the next morning, UCC::LAN is a great way to start the study break. Traditionally games that will be played are decided by consensus, but you can expect TF:2, Left 4 Dead, DoTA and even a bit of classic Quake III. It's also a good opportunity to sit in the UCC hacking away at your favourite project until early in the morning. Bring your computer, A POWER BOARD, A NETWORK CABLE, and HEADPHONES, as well as some money for pizza and snacks. Entry is free for members and $5 for non-members. MONDAY AT THE MOVIES: HACKERS ============================= After you've recovered from the LAN, join us on Monday night in the loft again to watch the 1995 classic, "Hackers". This movie is both an absolute crackup and an opportunity to see how lucky we are that the UCC is not a rollerblading rink. The movie starts at 6pm, and there will probably be pizza organised shortly beforehand. ==== As always, you can find out what events are coming up by visiting https://secure.ucc.asn.au/cal or subscribing to http://ucc.asn.au/ucc-events.ics in Google Calendar or your calendaring application. This means that security will not let us stay the night and we will need to leave Cameron Hall before 11pm. If any members are planning on joining the LAN late, it might be wise to rethink your plans! Committee apologizes for this blunder and hope to not repeat it for future LANs. -- Conrad Pogson From prothoss at gmail.com Mon Apr 13 19:13:20 2009 From: prothoss at gmail.com (Conrad Pogson) Date: Mon, 13 Apr 2009 19:13:20 +0800 Subject: [ucc-announce] Call for Donations, Getting Involved at UCC Message-ID: Calls for Donations ============== Recently there has been discussion on purchasing a new air conditioner for the machine room to replace the current unit. We'll be getting a larger unit that will allow us to use some of the rack mounted servers recently acquired. The model chosen is the Kelvinator KWH62CRA for $943, incl. 7-year extended warranty. Detail can be found at: http://www.theelectricdiscounter.com.au/asps/productpage1.asp?model=KWH62CRA&extwarranty=3EWAPP1000 We are hoping that we can get members to donate for this new unit and hope to have approximately half of the cost covered by donations. To donate, please register yourself on the list at: http://wiki.ucc.asn.au/MoneyMoneyMoney/NewAirCon Getting Involved at UCC ================= It has been mentioned recently that a number of members are unsure on how to get involved with projects at UCC and the most recent emails to the ucc list may still be a little lacking in information on how members can start their own projects. This email will be fairly useless for the older members of the club, but feel free to correct me if I'm incorrect about anything. The most important part of projects in UCC is to be signed up to the mailing lists, which you can do at: http://lists.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au/mailman/listinfo Depending on your desired project, you should be contacting a number of lists. It should be pretty clear which projects belong to which lists, but a basic guide is if you project is of a technical nature then it belongs on the tech mailing list. Please email this list if you are going to be fiddling with any equipment that belongs to the club to ensure no-one else had other plans for it. If it is a social event then send your email to the ucc list. Finally, if you would just like to see something changed around the club then you should be emailing the committee list, if it is a particularly delicate matter that you would like to have discussed just by the committee and yourself these is a private mailing list, committee-only, which is just for this purpose. You do not need permission to post to these list, so long as your email address is signed up then you will be able to send to the list. Documenting current projects can be done via our wiki, available at: http://wiki.ucc.asn.au/ If any members have questions related to projects or ideas for projects but aren't quire sure where to start, please email the ucc list (ucc at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au) and someone should be able to help you out! -- Conrad Pogson 2009 UCC President From zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au Sun Apr 19 23:49:25 2009 From: zanchey at ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au (David Adam) Date: Sun, 19 Apr 2009 23:49:25 +0800 (WST) Subject: [ucc-announce] Events: Monday at the Movies, Quiz Night Message-ID: Two important coming events! * Monday at the Movies: The Matrix - 27/04/09 6:00pm * UCC-UniSFA Quiz Night - Friday 1st May @ 8pm Monday at the Movies presents: THE MATRIX ========================================= Despite the cheesy tagline ("In a world of 1s and 0s...are you a zero, or The One?"), The Matrix (1999) asks questions about the fundamental nature of reality, and more importantly, how awesome it would be if being a hacker let you fly. See also: http://xkcd.com/566/ Join us in the loft above the UCC at 6pm on Monday 27th for The Matrix. Pizza and social interaction may occur. UCC-UniSFA Quiz Night ===================== On May 1st, the membership of the UCC and our friends at the University Science Fiction Association go head-to-head in a battle to see who has the most trivial mind. Firstly, members are reminded to close both the top and bottom doors when leaving at night to ensure the maximum security for the club. In addition, if any door does not open or appears to be jammed, do not use force to open the door.
