Message-ID: Hi all, I don't think there's been an announcement about Fresher Welcome, which is on tomorrow night (Friday March 6) from 7pm in the loft - all welcome, free pizza for first time members. Come and meet the newbies or catch up with old friends. There's even a rumour that the elusive author of dispense(1) will be around! --- As a prelude to the Fresher Welcome, we're going to be tidying up the machine room a bit from 5pm, which will probably involve downtime for Musundo and its arrays - expect /away and /services to be offline for up to an hour, which will also affect the website and the wiki. Because of our slightly bizarre network arrangement, traffic to and from Manduba will also be unavailable. Finally, colocated boxes which are sitting in the stack on top of Musundo may need turning off briefly. If you enjoy heavy lifting we could probably use an extra pair of hands here and there. We would like to remind members and users of our network that we have Terms and Conditions to using our network and that we also have to abide by UWA's Network Policy. We ask that members update themselves with these policies as UWA does provide UCC with with its internet connection. Below is a copy of the email sent to myself, Rufus and Conrad -- Jeremy Cole UCC Vice President "Hi, The University was recently sent the enclosed automated request from BayTSP, Inc. on behalf of MGM. The request alleges that someone using the UCC Internet connection downloaded/hosted an episode of Stargate Atlantis. This violates both the Commonwealth Copyright Act 1968 and the University of Western Australia's Computer and Software Use Regulations. Basically the request is cease and desist notice. In other words the individual who downloaded/hosted the episode should stop downloading and or hosting it and delete it from their system. Since we cannot easily determine who was responsible we would appreciate it if you could please urgently send an email to all your users of the UCC Internet connection such as: The University of Western Australia takes a very serious view of its computer networks being misused to infringe copyright. The University has had two reports of illegal conduct during the last week. The purpose of this letter is to remind you of Commonwealth Copyright Act 1968 and UWA's Computer and Software Use Regulations with reference to the use of copyright material on computers, networks and media. Unless you have the copyright owner's permission, transmitting copyrighted material (including over the internet) and copying such material in any way other than for legitimate academic or personal use, is illegal and can expose you and UWA to civil and criminal liability under copyright law. This applies to all types of copyright material, including music, films, games, software and other works. Individuals caught illegally transmitting copyrighted materials have faced legal action and had to pay thousands of dollars in compensation. Staff and students must not put unauthorised copies of copyrighted material on computers, networks or media owned by UWA. Nor should they put unauthorised copyrighted material on the internet, or engage in activities such as peer-to-peer 'file-sharing' that are likely to promote or lead to copyright infringements. Contravening UWA's Computer and Software Use Regulations may result in disciplinary action as per section D of the University Calendar. Please do not hesitate to contact the Student Internet Support Office on 6488 3814 or email support at student.uwa.edu.au if you have any questions. Sign ups were again numerous this year and there are many new faces around the club room. I encourage any members who have joined but not yet come into our club room (located in Cameron Hall above the Guild Tavern) to do so. On O-Day we have 61 new members join our ranks and 30 new accounts were made soon after with 55 returning members also joining the ranks. A big thank you to all that helped out on O-Day. 2. Events We've already had two successful events run this semester which many more to come! Firstly, thanks to all that helped run the Fresher Welcome held on 6th of March. It was fantastic to see the turn out of freshers, many of whom have stuck around. Monday Night at the Movies is also underway with our first screening of Wargames occuring on the 16th. Thanks to David Adam for organising this event. All members are encouraged to attend our next Monday Night at the Movies where we will be showing the classic TRON on the 30th. Pizza at 1800 with shorts at 1900 and the main feature kicking off at 1930. All events are listed in UCC's calendar, which you can subscribe to at: http://ucc.asn.au/ucc-events.ics 3. Getting Started Firstly all new members should have received a fresher guide on O-Day. If you have not received one, or you've managed to lose it among the pile of useless papers you've received since then, there should be some floating around the club room or you can grab one at: http://ucc.asn.au/infobase/freshguide/ If you have not yet activated your UCC account, come into the club room and ask for either a door, committee or wheel member. They will be able to create an account for you and show you arround our systems. 4. Communication Members with weblogs are welcome to join our Planet. http://planet.ucc.asn.au/ All that is required is a sensible RSS or Atom feed and to contact the Planet Master via planet at ucc.asn.au. New members haven't learnt to say no have been subscribed to ucc-announce, the Announcements mailing list, but you may also want to subscribe to the general chatter UCC lists. A lot of the running of the club is conducted on these lists and we encourage input from all members. http://lists.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/ucc We also encourage members to hang around in our irc channel, run on mussel. You can connect to it inside the clubroom by directing your irc client to mussel or if you are outside the club room direct your client to irc.ucc.asn.au You'll find most regular members in #ucc. 5. Renewing Accounts Returning members for 2009 who have not yet paid for their membership are encouraged to do so. Payment methods can be found at: http://www.ucc.asn.au/member/2009/ Feel free to send any questions regarding payment to the committee-only list. Prices have not changed in recent years.
