From oxinabox at ucc.asn.au Wed Apr 4 08:51:14 2012 From: oxinabox at ucc.asn.au (oxinabox at ucc.asn.au) Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2012 08:51:14 +0800 Subject: [ucc-announce] TechTalk 2: Learn you a XML and XSLT for Great Good. Message-ID: Hi all, Next tech talks is about XML (eXtensible Markup Langues) and XSLT (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) It is being put back one week to allow for the study break. These technologies are everywhere, and as such are something it is good idea to know at least alittle about (say for future jobs). The format will be pretty similar to Sulix's "Learn You A Linux for Great Good" talk. That is as an interactive workshop kind of deal. With slides mixed in with (hopefully) fun and (mildly) challenging exercises. It will be pressented by myself. When: 6:00pm Thursday 19th April 2012 Where: UCC clubroom Who: You, especially if you've never used an XSLT before. Why: because XML is ubiquitous, and XSLT is the right way to pressent it. How: with a Text Editor, a modern web-browser and perhaps xmllint and xsltproc. This is also the warning that for the purposes of this talk, all computers will be booted in to Linux, Those coming to the talk have priory over those who are just using them. Anyone who is inhibitting the talk will be kicked out of the clubroom Also stay tuned for info about the next tech talk (which will be a week or two after this one). Presented by Harry and perhaps others. About wire wrapping, and other rapid prototyping techniques. The quiz night is a hilarious evening of silly games, answering questions (ranging from the slightly obscure to incredibly obscure), and hurling (verbal) abuse at the judges ? but not too much. In theory, prizes are awarded for those teams who answer the most questions correctly. In practice the judges decide who wins based on a complicated system of bribery. Needless to say, this is an 18+ event." (before the quiz night) The talk is on XML and XSLT. XML is actually everywhere. Most software developers, see it everyday. Whether or not XML is a good thing (we will talk about this at the end), you will have to deal with it. So come down, and learn now. Last I checked the university didn't have a unit covering this. (they may have one now with the new courses). The talk will go for somewhere around an hour, maybe a bit more, or less, and is being presented by myself. *What to Bring: *your text editor of choice, and a XML and XSLT processor. All club machines have these, if you want to bring your own, I suggest libxml for Linux and Visual Studio for windows. In a pinch you can use a simple text editor (eg notepad) and a web-browser (eg firefox) *When:* Thursday 5:00pm - 6:00pm *Who:* anyone who ever plans develop software, or webpages, or vector images or ... My slides and examples are online, http://oxinabox.ucc.asn.au/TechTalks/Xml/ These are just a draft, but feel free to glance over them. We will be going though them fairly quickly. This is also letting you know that all clubroom machines will be booted into Linux, and people attending the talk will have priority on use.
