For those that don't know, Swan-con is happening from the 13th to the 17th this month. It's a great convention for people who are interested in all things science fiction, fantasy and everything in between. For this event Unisfa is having a raffle for a FULL membership to Swan-con that was donated to us by April Rutkay, a former Unisfa member. Normally, a membership like this costs $260 (or $190 for concession) but you can now buy a raffle ticket to be in the running to win a free membership. 1 raffle ticket = $2 3 raffle tickets = $5 To buy some raffle tickets, just come into the clubroom or contact our president Annique. This raffle closes on April 9th at 5pm and the winner will be announced via email and on the Facebook page the same night. Good luck to everyone! "Book burning" As a humourous reference, I get it, but I'd rather if emphasis was put on "removal" or the more formal library terms "de-accession" and "disposal". To my surprise, it seems we don't have a copy of "Fahrenheit 451" now? There was one in a pre-Koha library export (and an older, missing, copy). http://library.unisfa.asn.au/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?q=au:Bradbury,Ray I have a spare, good condition, paperback copy and I would be delighted to donate it. 2. Religious texts https://www.facebook.com/groups/UniSFA/permalink/10154693762026026/ [...] https://www.facebook.com/groups/UniSFA/permalink/10154675485296026/ [...] > Lyndon 'Frames' White: Can I request for the next book removal, > that we please remove all religious texts? > Sure we can laugh and say "Hahah yeah the Book of Mormon is an utter > fantasy." > But it is honestly kinda offensive to many who follow some religion, to > have their holy text in a speculative fiction library. > Like Reply 1 March 30 at 3:08pm Edited > Simon Lawrance: I am planning to do that when i find them, not having > done so yet is the only reason they havent been put up > Like Reply 1 March 30 at 3:11pm I'm thankful that it doesn't seem to have come up quite yet on today's update, but I think there does need to be a saving category for a small selection of books. The ones that may not fit the main thrust of science fiction and fantasy but do give some context to the 95-99% of books and materials that do fit. I get the impression it would (usually) be more pleasing than offensive to the more evangelical believers to have a Bible or Koran on hand. They are cultural cornerstones. I don't propose we collect the whole set, and I've got no attachment to a 1990 Webster's Dictionary but some types of references should make the cut. However, I'm also trying to make a plausible explanation of why we should keep "Dianetics" next to the rest of the: http://library.unisfa.asn.au/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?q=au:Hubbard,L.Ron Nick. -- Nick Bannon | "I made this letter longer than usual because nick-sig at rcpt.to | I lack the time to make it shorter." - Pascal From natashagilford1 at hotmail.com Thu Apr 6 21:56:17 2017 From: natashagilford1 at hotmail.com (natasha gilford) Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2017 13:56:17 +0000 Subject: [Unisfa] Committee Meeting minutes 05/04/17 Message-ID: Hi everyone, Things for your Eyes * Swancon Raffle is on! Buy raffle tickets for the chance to win a membership to Swancon this year. They are 1 for $2 and 3 for $5 and can be bought in the clubroom. The raffle will be drawn on April 9th at 5pm. * Cameron Hall Quiz Night - Tickets are now on sale! The quiz night will be at the Tav on the 12th of May. Either get a ticket for $15 or buy a table of 8 for $100. This will be a great inter-club event and there will be some awesome prizes. * Edward would like people to contact him about any comments/feedback about last year?s camp from anyone who went. * We are going to paint the room! If you have any preferences on colours and how you want the Unisfa atmosphere to be, please contact Annique. UniSFA Committee Meeting 05/04/2017 Attending: Annique, Edward, Natasha, Harry, Simon, Katherine, Finley, Jack and Kurt Absences: None Begin: 4:30 1. Committee Reports President Have put the money box on the wall and set up that, done book for it, swan-con raffle which is happening, had Space meeting and spoken with Casey, done risk assessment, did fridge run, Busy bee event, did paint swatches that we can talk more on. Vice President Camps! sent in booking and they haven?t got back to him yet but they should do by Thursday or Friday. We can move onto planning and he has now read every uwa policy about planning except for government policies such as the liquor control act. Edward will do his RSA and read up on other things as well. Secretary Did my First Aid training and got my certificate, organised a proposed timetable for welfare week and will go more into that later. Treasurer The balance right now is $11492.64. which is a bit down from last week but we did make a lot of purchases. There was a fridge run which cost $266.85 and the camp deposit was $250 and also the vacuum cleaner was cover budget coming to $237. The cleaner cost more than expected because the cheaper ones would have broken a lot more easily and this one will last. However, we will need someone to help bring it to uni. Also did screenings of Home and Iron Fist. Librarian Made sponsor crawl event on Facebook and 2 books have gone up for burning with only Dogbert?s Clues for the Clueless has been taken by someone and only the Webster?s dictionary remains for anyone who wants it. Done first aid also looked at appeals and set up the book theme of the while. Fresher Rep Made Fresher event and poster is near completion, it looks really good. OCM Report - Finley Kept Jack alive and also got first aid certificate. OCM Report - Jack Organising space unisfa collaborative event and made sure that Annique did add triffords to the risk assessment form. The logos have been put together so we can hand them into the guild for posters. The emp for stargazing is almost finalised and just need Annique?s part. OCM Report - Kurt Been working on poster and almost finalised and have also been updating the screenings and unisfa pinned posts. 2. Events * SwanCon * is a thing, buy raffle tickets and people should come along, It is$2 if it?s your first time to swan-con on one of the days. most committee have not been before. * Raffle drawn next sunday at 5pm. Annique will not buy a ticket to make sure it is all above board. * Sponsor Crawl * Simon has had a response from Stefan?s who will donate some books and we will also get 10% discount that day. So we?ll be getting donations from Stefan?s Bookshop and White Dwarf. * Easter Picnic * 23 April, 11am-3pm. Harry and Edward have noticed that most events have about 10 posters up around the uni. Annique has talked to Casey and usually clubs will get 30 posters and they will be cycled through up until the event. The closer to the event, the higher the priority. We will also want to put some around the clubroom and in Cameron Hall. Harry says he is willing to spend more for posters. Annique has messages from Arts union who say that we can put flyers or posters up in their clubroom. We will ask about other Cameron Hall clubs whether we can poster up in their clubrooms as well. * little flyers can be drafted up by Edward - tardis background usually * Quiz Night - We can start selling tickets. They?re selling for $15 individually or buy 8 for $100. People will probably pay for it in notes so we need it to be separate from normal money system. We could use the raffle box when raffle is over. Annique says probably will use a different moneybox. Unigames does money bags where cash is put into bag and then into cash box with label. We will probably do that with the plastic bags and if we need to, we can get more from guild. Tickets are now on sale! * Welfare Week * Patrice from Student Assist is willing to give a quick talk on one of the days about what they do and resources that can be accessed. * Monday 22nd May - Bob Ross screening * Tuesday 23rd May - Bake-off day/evening - maybe not official event? * Wednesday 24th May - committee meeting - disney sci-fi - Treasure Planet * Thursday 25th May - Finley?s chillposting/shitposting * Friday 26th May - Pyjama party w/Patrice talk on welfare * Camp * 1st to the 4th December * DARE want a credit card so they can charge us if we break things and Harry has agreed to use his as Guild will not let us use theirs. DARE will probably get back to us by Thursday or Friday. * Main purpose/attraction? - socialise with members of the club in a relaxed atmosphere maybe? * people who went to camp last year, contact Ed about feedback, Patrick has loads of feedback. * people with cars. we will need committee members with cars so we can drive back trouble-makers and for any emergencies. We will need someone sober each night for this. * swimming? No * 3 months members can come to camp. This way you can not just buy membership and ticket on the same day. We could consider limiting to just current students but decide that would stop too many people from coming * Ed is event manager so has to be sober for the whole event and needs a second in command to do the same. Annique is willing and as is Harry to be second-in-commands. * RSA - Annique has one and every committee member needs to send theirs through. * food and safety checks - Jack sends link for a certification website. * leadership training, everyone needs to do this who has not already done so. next one is in study break. * Expected number of guests - 25 3. Screenings * Monday - low turnout for Iron Fist so Harry will end it. Lucifer instead with Simon * Tuesday - Little Shop of Horror?s w/Tim and maybe Wizard of Oz if can find a copy * Wednesday - committee meeting, Danger 5 w/Theo * Thursday - Finley Shitposting - sonic boom with the wiiU * Friday - Twilight Zone screening w/harry * Want to do Alien screening in time for Unisfa goes Alien covenant - Ed can make emp for it in May 4. Book Removal New Appeals on Current Burn List Jonathan Livingston Seagull - Appeal described it as * bird teleporting through time and space and referenced in other sci-fi fantasy books * surreal v sci fi fantasy - where do we draw the line? * more people have come in and read it since it was put up so it has sparked more interest. * We decide to wait until next week for voting on this book. Books to Be Removed Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy * Motion to remove from library - motion fails with 4 votes for and 5 against * Book is saved and will be placed back into the library The Sum of All Fears - Tom Clancy * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously * The book?s original donor will be contacted first and then if it is not wanted by them, it will be placed on the Removed books shelf in Unisfa for members to have for free Clear and Present Danger by Tom Clancy * motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously * The book?s original donor will be contacted first and then if it is not wanted by them, it will be placed on the Removed books shelf in Unisfa for members to have for free Aggressive Retail Therapy by Grant Watson * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously * The book?s original donor will be contacted first and then if it is not wanted by them, it will be placed on the Removed books shelf in Unisfa for members to have for free Today?s 1st Sensation Boy George * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously * The book?s original donor will be contacted first and then if it is not wanted by them, it will be placed on the Removed books shelf in Unisfa for members to have for free Questions by Members on Burn List ? How many times can committees put a book up for the burn? Simon will only put the book up once however we cannot promise the same for future librarians. Simon will give a list of successfully appealed books to the next librarian. ? Can we impose something like if its saved once its saved for 2 years or so and put on a booklist to get freshers interested in it? Main issue with this is that future committees may not give as much consideration to older members/ life members as the current committee.Essentially to stop things getting chucked because the people who know about it aren?t paid members but still care about the club and have an online presence. We would have to discuss this at an OGM to make this constitutional for there to be a delay. Future committees should not be bound by our committee decisions and they will still be elected officials representing their members so we cannot control who they listen to. For people who are no longer paid members, they can still comment on the Faceboook posts or use other methods to persuade paid members to object to book removal decisions. The committee does read the Facebook comments which can influence the final decision unless there are at least 5 appeals on the one book. Although we will make a list of the saved books so that new and current members can be recommended them. We?ve already had a higher interest in the library since the book removal began. Books up for Burn List * Hannibal by Thomas Harris * It's your favourite psycho-ologist, he's eating people and doing bad psych. He continues to be surprisingly human and refuses to become the literal monster he should be, rip the fantasy. * Motion to add to burn list - Motion passes with 9 votes for and 1 vote against * Black Sunday by Thomas Harris * A deranged pilot is flying a blimp and it trying to crash it into a stadium during the super bowl, can they be stopped? It's a crime/psychological thriller, fantasy/scifi not present. * Motion to add book to Burn List - Motion passes unanimously * Cloudstreet by Tim Winton * An Australian suburban drama that is a classic not sci-fi fantasy, * motion to place in burn list - passes unanimously * Nosepicking for Pleasure by Roland Flicket * This is exactly what it sounds like, a comprehensive guide of how to enjoy picking your nose. * Motion to add to burn list - Motion passes unanimously * City of God by Cecelia Holland * The Borgias and the Papal State are in conflict and a secretary/spy for the Borgias is in the middle of it. Roman politics and nary a mythological creature in sight. * Motion to add to burn list - Motion passes unanimously These books will be placed on the Burn List for 2 weeks and during this time members can send their objections to unisfa-librarian at guild.uwa.edu.au 5. Book Theme * people should write reviews * Book club is happening on Thursday - urban fantasy - tying into Fantasy sans Tolkien 6. Tenancy Tenancy still have not come over and told us whether we?ll have a clubroom over study break with the changes to the lockers. Painting the room and re-doing the floors * paint swatches have been brought to the meeting by Annique * We need to organise before we have opportunity over winter break * Annique will start discussion on Facebook about what people want for the vibe - spacey/fantasy/hospital waiting room/go for comfy librarian feeling * paint cost will be taken into consideration * We can?t have too dark colours because heat is a thing and not too light because things can be gross * Ideas for paint - please tell us * Floors should hopefully look similar to outside the clubroom Busy Bee * We need to move all books out of cupboard to put back into bookshelves, leak seems to be fixed * Anthologies back into boxes * We need to have our books on display 7. General Business Facebook * We have over 500 people in Facebook group so we can no longer invite everyone to events * This is hurting our events as we cannot invite everyone and not everyone is friends with the entire club membership * Solutions - We can do a purge in which we maybe could remove non-active former members. Then if people ask we can put them back in and only people who are not bothered will be off the Facebook page * by not active - we will check when joined and look for activity on page, going to events, comments, etc. * 40th anniversary is happening next year so we should make sure that former members can still be contacted. We do still have e-mail addresses so we could contact them that way. * Katherine will try to invite freshers to events and make friends on Facebook but this is only a temporary solution. * Maybe ask older members who would know which people are no longer members or life members and who aren?t active members anymore and would not be bothered about being removed from the Facebook group. * We could make the page public however there are concerns such as that public events are an issue in who we want to invite as well as people who do not want some things that are posted to be made public. * Annique will contact older members and discuss options. Vacuum * Harry needs help to get vacuum to clubroom * Katherine will pick up Harry and vacuum for busy bee E-mails * e-mails are still being sent to old committee * for some old committee so we should check * Natasha will contact guild about why this is happening and how to stop this soon. Finley - committee is good and they?re doing a good job. We love Finley. Finish: 5:48 Action Items Annique - send risk assessment to Jack for Star-gazing, Busy Bee reminder for CCC, talk to older members Edward - unisfa flyers for Arts Union - camp in general, send him feedback on last year?s camp Natasha - see guild about e-mails and also stay alive, food safety check Harry - check uniprint, food safety check Simon - library things - eternal action item, food safety check Katherine - pick up harry and vacuum, keep on poster, food safety check Finley - keep Jack and themselves alive, food safety check Jack - see guild about printing posters, stay alive, food safety check Kurt - see guild about printing posters, food safety check -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Ugh Facebook. Anyway - Potentially - you could have a Unisfa Events group which is just for events, to solve this issue, and subscribe current members (As per your membership lists from o-day on) to this. This would also be less work than trying to sort through all 500+ people on the current community and determine if they are ?active?. Then just post events created by UniSFA events in the main UniSFA group, and people who aren?t part of UniSFA Events would still be able to join but not be invited, but you can invite all your current members. It?s kind of nice to have everyone who was in the club be in the Facebook for things like the 40th anniversary etc, and general chat purposes, IMO. UniSFA Committee Meeting 12/04/2017 Attending: Annique, Edward, Natasha, Harry, Simon, Katherine, Finley, Jack, and Kurt. Absences: None Begin: 4:30pm 1. Committee Reports President Swancon raffle happened and David Thatcher won so congratulations to him. Then had no idea how to transfer due to technical difficulties but will still try and do so soon. The Busy Bee happened where the clubroom was cleaned and we moved the books. Also did a Barbarella screening went to the tenancy meeting, made the Quiz night event although haven?t posted it yet to wait for meeting to confirm. Also put up lost property post and after two weeks these things will go to guild. Annique also made a poll about aesthetic for the clubroom painting. Vice President Went to the Busy bee and made a take-one box for flyers and pamphlets which we can put more stuff into. Tidied up stationary and got even more camp news which he will go into later. Secretary I have subscribed and unsubscribed members, spoken to guild and Soc about our emails and will discuss that later. Also have panicked about assignments. Treasurer Did multiple screenings, made a deposit, bought a vacuum and brought it in, made budgets for things as well. Librarian The books are back on shelves with some space from books gone from mould. The book buy is next week so the list for that is being sorted. Simon is getting his wisdom teeth out tomorrow so will be out of commission for a while and may only respond in vaguely disjointed words. Also hosted lucifer which went well. Fresher Rep Delivered the vacuum and is hosting her first screening tonight. Also finished the posters with Kurt. It was mostly Kurt, thanks Kurt. OCM Report - Finley Jack still alive, Finley still alive so study hasn?t killed them yet. We believe in Finley. OCM Report - Jack Can confirm not dead. stargazing is going. OCM Report - Kurt Sorted out posters and spread them around. We have three spares so we can put up if we have some cool ideas of where to put them. 2. Events * Swancon * is a thing that is happening. Annique will go and will post updates on things that are happening. Simon says someone will need to return Aggressive retail Therapy to Grant as he will not be able to go. * Sponsor Crawl * Simon has made a list and still needs responses from some comic stores about donations and will call them to check up on sponsors for more prizes for quiz night. Fin offers to substitute for Simon if pain too much but Simon says that he should be fine by then. * Easter Picnic * Everything is all good and just need to confirm meeting in study break so that final easter stuff can be done then. Leadership training may disrupt but that should be alright. * We need to buy food soon because we need cheap chocolate prices. Is harry free for buying the discounted chocolates? Harry wants to do regular food run on Tuesdays and will bring this up in general business. Annique says it might be better for Saturday but the chocolates will not be cheap by then. So it is better to get the eggs after Easter. Edward needs to know budget and Harry could come with Edward to see how many eggs we can buy. * Leadership Training * This will be on the Wednesday and Thursday next week and ends at 2:30 so can have a meeting at 4:30. We can figure this out close to day. * Stargazing * that is set to go so all we need to do is make the event on Facebook. Ticketing will be $5 for members and $10 non-members and we don?t have physical tickets so we?ll need to keep a list of people who have paid. This may get mixed up with quiz night tickets so we?ll mark it down with asStar for star-gazing and a question mark for quiz night. Sheet of paper with money box or google drive? We?ll just have a physical list with name, phone number, signed by committee/ccc member, and whether its paid or not. * Simon will bring first aid kit * Cameron Hall First Aid * Taylor dumped unigames people in group chat for first aid. This can happen anytime because the first aid people can work around us. Kurt and Edward would like to do it and Annique will talk about it with Alex from UCC about when to have the event. * Cameron Hall Quiz Night * Event set up just need confirmation and issues with Facebook first. * Discussion over tickets, we come up with bagging system. * Welfare Week * sorting out emp right now, not much to report. * Unisfa ges to Panto * Thursday is their lowest day so best day for us. Edward will make event on Facebook * Winter LARP * Annique needs two representatives for sub-committee with unigames, date is not confirmed but need people to work this out. Annique is not fussed about it. Kurt volunteers for it. This will be on the winter holidays. * Camp * The deposit has left the account and booking form has been completed but no response yet which is worrying. Edward has sent an email about this but no reply yet. There are also questions for committee about our mobiles. We all have mobiles but 2 people are not on telstra or optus which is a concern as only those providers will have cell reception at DARE. The main description of the camp was approved last year and we are still happy with that one so we?ll go with it and see how it turns out. Toby has sent feedback so Ed is compiling new suggestions as well. * People need to do food safety * please send Ed feedback or suggestions, wants to do an itinerary 3. Screenings * Monday - Easter Monday so public holiday - Free * Tuesday - Free * Wednesday - committee meeting and free * Thursday - book discussions w/Leah * Friday - Sponsor crawl - Twilight Zone w/Harry * Saturday - star-gazing 5. Book Removal Books up for Removal * Most of My Patients are animals - Robert M. Miller * - no fantasy at all, a book about being a veterinarian * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously * The Tightrope Men by Desmond Bagley * Thriller genre - facial reconstruction surgery - not focus of book and not sci-fi * motion to remove from library - motion passes with 6 votes for and 3 votes against * Killer of Men by Christian Cameron * Achilles is a myth - no fantasy, just a historical fiction novel * motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously * Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach * Surreal or fantasy? Author?s intent? * Motion to remove from library - motion fails with 2 votes for and 7 votes against. * Stonehenge: Where Atlantis Died by Harry Harrison and Leon Stover * historical fiction? Germanic tribal warfare but still Atlantis * author was a historian and did research and papers on actual theories - fiction book to fit theories, his theories have been disproven. Author considers it as science fiction * Motion to remove from library - motion fails with 4 votes for and 5 votes against Books for Book Removal List * The Bird Smugglers by Joan Phipson * Book about bird smugglers and children who attempt to stop bird smugglers * Motion to add to Book Removal List - motion passes unanimously * White Lie by John Templeton-Smith * CIA thriller about a mercenary - old assassin comes back more lethal than ever * Motion to add to Book Removal List - motion passes unanimously * Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard * Is a religious text - scientology is a religion * Motion to add to Book Removal List - motion passes unanimously * Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan * Woman has tourist experience with Aboriginal people meant to be based on a true event but turned out to be a lie. not about Australian mythology. about a fictional tribe. Definitely got problems. Annique gives diplomatic response about book. * motion to add to Book Removal List - motion passes unanimously * The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterson * Still not fantasy because it is not meant to be real and is still not sci-fi and is just in the mind of a child. Simon wants to set precedent that books that are not sci-fi or fantasy should be removed from library. Counter by Jack that if the book has been enjoyed by club members, is it better for it to stay in the library. Question over whether if club enjoys it should it stay? Fannish culture? * Motion to add to Book Removal List - motion fails with 5 votes for and 4 votes against 6. Facebook Pages * we had a couple of suggestions from people * People have been affected by not being invited to events which has negatively impacted our screenings and events * facebook event pages - no because we do not want to fragment community like that and having to fragment membership on basis of people no longer members. history is significant. also don?t want to have multiple pages to run * page for old guard - add people from Facebook page at the end of the year - disrupts old members not financial members * anyone who buys membership is maintained * does still fragment membership - we have had issues with screening page because not a lot of people are joining it because people don?t know about screenings. Last year people already were enthusiastic and so joined the page but now new members have not known this. * Removing members * not a long-term solution, people may be removed that may not want to be * President friends everyone * not ideal because we do not want 515 members as new friends with it growing every new presidency * fake president profile? * not everyone wants to friend a random profile. * may seem like a bot if multiple people logging in from different devices * We can talk to Pantomime and Science Union as they have done this - connect to deep thought email. Unisfa property * could be digging our hole into Facebook * Public Facebook Page? * Space had issue of fracturing membership * want to keep events private * The issue is with new freshers, oldguard, people coming back, they may not know what to like/add themselves to. No conclusion. Further discussion required but will need a short term solution. 7. Tenancy Tenancy has a new website and will have a new uni website next year. We moved stuff during busy bee, we?ve moved stuff from bench that will be renovated. We have permission to have brown cupboard and library return box stay there during the renovation. We need to discuss compactor bookshelves and whether it can be outside near brown cupboard so we can start storing stuff there because it can be locked. Can we easily get into it? We could move the desk. Annique will talk to Rhys. can access clubroom during renovations and UCC can too. * Painting * Annique made a post - hobbit hole library is the highest right now * We?ll give it a bit more time and discuss more. get vibe from general public Lost property * people should get lost property * The calculator has been claimed and can be borrowed by people needing one for a test * discussion about nerf guns ongoing 8. General Business Emails * Talked to Guild and Soc and the secretary will be updating their system again so that should be fixed. Fridge Runs * need one for star-gazing, picnic, fridges, * Harry wants to do regular one on Tuesdays - will post on ccc about doing fridge runs. Question about bins * normal bin, recycle bin - recycle for cans? somebody?s moved sign for recycle bin. * one for cans specially. White cupboard * The chain is annoying, Edward wants to change it and has talked to Taylor. He wants to get measurements and buy bolt for it from bunnings * Harry says that we need tenancy permission, Annique will ask at the same time about compact bookshelves * Harry gives permission for price of bolt. Finley?s Positive Message of the Week - Finley loves everyone and we?re doing a good job and we love Fin. *Thumbs up* Finish: 5:42pm Action Items Annique - write up tenancy minutes. get solid disc cases for loose dvd, talk to Rhys, Facebook and quiz night event Edward - make unisfa goes panto event, please send feedback., print saved books for shelf Natasha - add photos of lost property, make post about screenings on CCC general secretary stuff Harry - get food for picnic, make post on CCC, make budgets for events Simon - get Annique essays on sci-fi, general library stuff Katherine - Keep Jack alive Finley - keep Jack alive Jack - stargazing event, LARP meeting Kurt - Larp meeting [cid:2C343906-C6ED-475A-ACC4-194E99E39A85 at lan] [cid:1EBBEAB9-7EC2-411C-BC2F-EA3F0A0DAA28 at lan] [cid:3E6C3794-11E8-463C-BEA2-5ACFC617E1D2 at lan] [cid:52149876-ECF2-479F-8952-1D6CC2880EC7 at lan] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'd like to make an appeal; and a proposal. We don't actually have much Hubbard; we also have (on the shelf as of Friday): * "Battlefield Earth"; * an incomplete series "Mission Earth", missing parts 2, 3, and 4; As seen here: http://library.unisfa.asn.au/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?q=au:Hubbard,L.Ron http://library.unisfa.asn.au/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?q=au:L.%20Ron%20Hubbard I propose that we remove the incomplete series; keep "Dianetics"; and pick up one of his earlier and slightly less terrible books in the coming year, perhaps try at the "Save The Children" on-campus booksale? There's some positively reviewed ones here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Written_works_of_L._Ron_Hubbard https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/33503.L_Ron_Hubbard "Dianetics" is not precisely a religious text itself, but it is proto-Scientology and it does have a special story in the annals of SF. (like many stories, some parts may be more verifiably true than others) https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/2671/is-there-any-evidence-for-the-bet-between-robert-a-heinlein-and-l-ron-hubbard https://everything2.com/title/The+Heinlein+-+Hubbard+Wager+Myth Comparative religion is an important trope (or three) in SF and I don't want to purge religion in toto. Committee Reports President Annique went to Swancon and talked to old unisfans. She got a warm welcome and will go in to more detail later. The cupboards are a thing and also made a Facebook unisfa person. Also went to SOC Meeting, emailed pac about being pac and has had no response. SOC is trying to fix the mailing list but not very well. Also got signed books from swan con Vice President Edward did a screening and it went well. Also donated some dvd?s, wall-e, adventure time, futurama and have looked into some unisfa goes things. The camp booking is confirmed. Secretary I?ve almost got the EMP done for the pyjama party but have some questions about other days and have almost completed my food and safety check. Treasurer The twilight zone screening went well and people showed up. Also purchased chocolate from swancon. He did a fridge run on tuesday and yet already out of golden gaytimes, Is now halfway through doing leadership training and has withdrawn money for sponsor crawl. Librarian Now is 4x less wise due to wisdom teeth removal. The library has not burned down and there have been no complaints on Facebook book removal post. A book from 2006 is being returned and found the necromincon. Fresher Rep Jack is alive and Katherine has seen freshers around campus. Also held first screening. There has been no conversation on quiz night among the freshers although Katherine has asked freshers to come. general nodding. OCM Report - Finley Jack is still alive. Also talked to Andre from Pantomime about creating unisfan person. Now thinks that it?s a good idea. Fin also went to easter breakfast. OCM Report - Jack Loads of stargazing stuff which is a go. Cam and him have made cameron hall quiz night posters. OCM Report - Kurt Has made a poster and is alive. 2. Events * Swancon * a thing that happened which was really good. We should push it more next year but there is the expense for students. Annique got put in contact with programmer for next year and they?re keen for younger audience targets. They asked whether we could promote some of their screenings which we can probably do. There have also been talks of unisfa run panels and on panels. This might mean we could get cheaper tickets. The old guard talked about things and there was a lot of support for Unisfa. There was also lot of talk about 40th anniversary with a lot of people put in contact with. Annique will grab a whole thing of connections to give to next committee. * Gengiscon was there launching their 2018 convention. It was made as a reaction to swan con as it?s more affordable and aimed at students with it only $25 for students for the whole week. This is not until next january and we will need to deal with. Annique has a ticket already * Annique met a whole bunch of authors and got books signed. Simon will find a spot to display them in. * Sponsor Crawl * Harry has money for that and will put in fanny pack on the day. All is looking good. * Easter Picnic * There is not anything to report as it?s all planned and good but what day should the fridge run be? It will happen this saturday as easter eggs have been bought already. Everyone on committee except maybe Finley and Kurt are coming. Harry will be bringing eggs and will use committee chat to organise carpool. It starts at 11 and committee people should arrive 15 minutes beforehand and start liveblogging their location * Stargazing * Jack is organising what people are doing on the day. Space is doing everything but the food so we need to bring sausages, buns, (gluten free). This is a paid event so pulling all the stops with actual buns.We have water in cupboards and need to get soft drinks. We already have tea and coffee supplies and will do check of that. Fridge Run will happen on Saturday as well. * Jack has made a post on carpooling. * Simon is bringing fairy lights and stuff. * CCC or committee meeting or have a car in general, please offer up carpooling * bring torches, fairy lights and lights in general. * Alien Screening * The movie comes out Thursday 11th May and quiz night is night after so we don?t want to do them in a row. But also don?t want to do it too late so maybe 20th May. Saturday, Kai would run all-day screening of all alien screenings and then collectively go to new alien movie. we need to lock in that for EMP * We?ll probably so to events innaloo because close to stirling station and buses. * Edward can start emp and get in touch with Kai, we?re going to have to go with that day. * Unisfa goes to Panto * 12th of May, * Cameron Hall First Aid * still confirming date for that. Low-key handed over to Alex from UCC because makes sense for person doing first aid to be doing the event. * Cameron Hall Quiz Night * Jack and Cam have done posters that are getting reviewed and we will have dark guizmittee meeting, sell tickets, * Welfare Week * will not need to do emp for other stuff than pyjama party, unisfa goes?s during this week, Finley will do slime factory event. * Unisfa goes to the zoo on the weekend of welfare week, group booking deals screen zootopia afterwards. This will be on the 27th of May and Edward has had a quick chat to casey. * There will be alcohol at the Zoo restaurant but our event is alcohol free * Camp * Booking is confirmed so we can start doing itinerary once we have a site map so we know what we?ll be doing. Edward has emailed them asking for that and is now waiting for them to get back to us. * People need to do food training * need more feedback 3. Screenings Book Club * next book club is Thursday. The next one is May 4th which is the day we?re going to pantomime. We need to contact leah about what she wants to do. Simon will do so. We need to start screenings more at 5 because better for people just finishing classes. problems for public transport, issue for freshers and other people. 5 will be a benchmark. * Monday - Lucifer w/Simon * Tuesday - Labyrinth and Dark Crystal w/Tim - Anzac Day, * Wednesday - Holy Musical Batman * Thursday - Dreamworks biggest mistakes w/ Finley shitposting, * Friday - Twilight zone or mystery science theatre, 4. Book Removal Book Appeals One appeal for Dianetics due to us not having a lot of Hubbard books. Th appeal says that the book is not completely religious and they do not want Unisfa to purge religion in total. We won?t need to address this this week. We will vote on this next week. Books for Removal List Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk * Book about a teenage girl is physically disfigured and experiences the social isolation that comes from it, explores identity issues, * It is a product of its time * Motion to add to book removal list library - motion passes unanimously Books to be Removed from Library Nose picking for Pleasure: A Handy Guide by Roland Flickett * no appeals, no discussion points * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously Cloudstreet by Tim Winton * no appeals * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously City of God by Cecelia Holland * no appeals, * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously Black Sunday by Thomas Harris * no appeals, * Motion to remove from library - motion passes unanimously Hannibal by Thomas Harris * is technically impossible for Hannibal to exist based on psychological reasons, is implied to be more magical realism. is a staple in horror genre. lends itself greatly to sci-fi/fantasy books, highly referenced in popular culture. on the edge, * Motion to remove from library - motion passes with 6 votes for, 2 votes against and 1 abstain. 5. Facebook Groups * There are too many people to invite to events * separate unisfa persona that friends everyone. * Edward thinks that we should have waited until the committee meeting to make the persona. * people can opt out of events by not friending it. * everyone can access it on committee to add people and invite people to events. don?t want it to be a faceless committee thing. long term solution * Andre has been spoken to in regards to pantomime one and it seems to be working well for them. * we?ll see how it works, and then see about screening pages. * will only invite people who want to go to events. * currently called Unisfa Deepthought, linked to deep thought email and should be good for committee handover, will need changes to handover booklet * Annique will add all of committee so we can have a look and monitor it beforehand. * Kurt has made a quick bio. It is good. 6. Tenancy We have new cupboards and we like them as it looks good for us. They are very deep and big and clean. We will need to re-evaluate what we put outside. Like the wheeled trolley that used to be donation trolley but doesn?t fit anymore so we may need to repurpose it. We also need to change return box as well. We do not have bench space anymore so need to change things. 7. General Business SOC Meeting * casey has broken her arm which has slowed down submissions. But a new guy started yesterday so hopefully it is speeding up. * We can now sell merchandise through second hand bookshop * There is student engagement program so we need to get dates so we know about high schoolers infiltrating our uni ground. We can opt in to have our club promoted to young people. We are keen for this to relate to the youth. * social justice week is on week 2 semester 2 * SOC is trying to fix the mailing list SOC Mailing List * said they?ll compile a list and send emails to us about fixing our emails. * Yet this defeats the purpose so they?ll get back to us Finley?s Positive Thought of the Week: Fin loves us all and we love Finley. They also recommend a documentary. Finish: 5:56pm Action Items Annique: contact SOC about student engagement, kick chris Edward: Camp stuff, receive feedback Natasha: Finish food safety and send to Jack Harry: fridge runs Simon: general library things Katherine: keep Jack alive Finley: keep Jack alive Jack: fridge run for stargazing Kurt: Keep Jack Alive -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The agenda is as follows: - Committee reports - Events - Screenings - Facebook groups - Book removal - Tenancy - General Business If you have any ideas about these topics, please come to the meeting and share them to us! Natasha Gilford (Secretary) From alias.sqbr at gmail.com Fri Apr 21 23:36:18 2017 From: alias.sqbr at gmail.com (Sophie Ambrose) Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2017 23:36:18 +0800 Subject: [Unisfa] Committee Meeting Minutes In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: a thing that happened which was really good. As one of these old guard: yes! We love you guys! It's always great seeing unisfans at Swancon, I know it's expensive but it's always great when any of you can make it, you're the Future of Fandom and all that :) Also, something I think I've said before but the current committee were all probably in highschool at the time so I'll say it again: I, and I would say most ex-members, feel like Unisfa belongs to the current active members, especially current UWA students. The club meant a lot to me in my day, and I still have a lot of affection for it. I am very happy when I can help out unisfans or offer advice, especially when it comes to welcoming young people into the older-people-dominated parts of fandom. But as long as the committee are still holding to the general principles of the club (which you and every committee have done during my 20 years as a member) I don't feel like it's my place to interfere or poke at your decisions. I still remember how annoying it was when a bunch of the old guard of the day railed against those of us in the 1999 committee about the Evils Of Getting A TV, and would never want to be that guy. It's your club now. I also don't want to fill the list with my rambling so don't tend to post much, but like lurking to keep an affectionate eye on what the club is up to. And you seem to be doing great! I hope to meet some of you at the 40th, health permitting. *waves cheerfully from the mists of time* Sophie Ambrose (alias sqbr, alias Dr Sophie, alias Sweet Spice back when that was a topical reference) On Fri, Apr 21, 2017 at 10:16 AM, natasha gilford < natashagilford1 at hotmail.com> wrote: > Hi everyone! > > Sorry for the late committee minutes, > > > *Things for your Eyes* > > - Edward would like suggestions and feedback for this year?s camp so > please message him with any ideas > > > > - Stargazing Night! > > > - April 22nd at 5pm-11pm at Lesmurdie Falls National Park > - Tickets are $5 for members of Unisfa and Space and $10 for > non-members > - Tickets include drink, sausage sizzle (includes vegetarian options) > and a turn on the telescope > - There is a carpooling thread on the Facebook Post so if you have car > or need a ride, comment on there > - Remember to bring torches, fairy lights and anything else you can > think of > > > > - Easter Picnic > > > - April 23rd at 11am-3pm at the King?s Park Pioneer Women?s Memorial > - Come have fun and enjoy the Easter Egg Hunt > > > > - Unisfa Goes: Spy School Musical > > > - May 4th at 7:30pm-9:30pm at the Dolphin Theatre > - Come to the new Pantomime production and enjoy spies, musicals, > J.O.C.K?s and N.E.R.D?s > > > > - Cameron Hall Quiz Night > > > - Tickets are now on sale! > - May 12th at 6pm-11pm at the Tav > - Tickets are $15pp or $100 for a table of 8 > - This will be a great inter-club event and there will be some awesome > prizes! > > > *UniSFA Committee Meeting 19/04/17* > > > *Attending: *Annique, Edward, Natasha, Harry, Simon, Katherine, Finley, > Jack and Kurt > > *Absences: *None > > > *Agenda* > > - committee reports > > > - sponsor crawl > - easter picnic > - stargazing > - cameron hall quiz night > - cameron hall first aid > - welfare week > - camp > > > - screenings > - book removal > - facebook groups > - tenancy > > > - painting > > > - general business > > > *Begin:* 4:30 > > > *1. UniSFA Committee Meeting 26/04/17 Attending: Annique, Edward, Natasha, Harry, Simon, Katherine, Finley, Jack and kurt Absences: None Begin: 4:30 1. Committee Reports President Left cd cases for the loose disks, went to different events and screenings, went to a bunch of different subcommittee meetings and set up unisfa deep thought Facebook page but will go into more detail later. Vice President The Easter picnic went well and then went to the camp subcommittee, myguild is down which is bad so we can?t update emps but there are no problems because Casey is aware of this. He can complete them quickly when the site is back up. Also made the next book theme poster. Secretary Got my food I?m Alert thing done and sent that to Ed and Jack, did the emp and just waiting for that. Also went to a bunch of events this weekend which were all really good and the camp subcommittee meeting. Treasurer Completed leadership training plus camp training, accidentally got a book donated on the sponsor crawl. He couldn?t do the Twilight Zone screening but may do another one soon. Also went to stargazing and saw a gold star ( Annique says he is a gold star), attended starmittee meeting and regained money and deposited it to account. Librarian Did a bunch of things, did sponsor crawl and all the sponsors are down for prizes. Also first aided for events and no one was injured. Have spoken with creative writing and poetry club who are cool and interested in competitions. Also did leadership training and screened lucifer. Fresher Rep Have completed leadership training and went to many events and the camp subcommittee meeting. Then made a fresher page post about suggestions for camp but no one responded because freshers are too cool for us OCM Report - Finley Finley has achieved action items, we?re proud. OCM Report - Jack The stargazing is complete and we made $5. OCM Report - Kurt *Screaming* Gahhhhh. He had two midsems and is caught up to nothing. Also went to leadership training and have thought about the camp poster 2. Events * Sponsor Crawl * Simon spent $598.20 which was $1.80 less than we were going to. Stefan donated a lot of free books There is one book on order and will be picked up by next week and Simon will be going back for quiz night prizes. * bought the required books for half of membership sign up and bought all of the books required due to the book removals. * Stargazing * They had the meeting earlier. The weather could have been better but still good and only criticism was that we needed bbq sauce. There were 6 non-members from the 20 people that showed up. There was too much food so now we have extra snacks and things which are in the cupboard and available for sale so will probably need a sign made up. The chips are $3, the marshmallows are $5 and the lollies are $2.50. We needed more lights but due to the generator we could not have any more. We can re-use the book club questions because we didn?t get around to them. Each club made around $5 wit each club spending $75 roughly and making back around $80 each. Space will reimburse us for expenses. each club. * probably will not do again next semester as it ended up not that relevant to our club interests as there was not enough book club discussion * Easter Picnic * It went well although we didn?t do the egg hunt due to laziness and more people wanted to hide the eggs than to hunt them. Still a good time had by all but we should pick a spot next time with more consistent shade. * Maybe more in clubroom advertising but don?t want it to be awkward for people though. We don?t want to pressure people into going to events. Could be different for free events? * At least more frequent event posting and in clubroom discussion * Katherine suggests not on the day before classes come back so people aren?t too stressed. So maybe the saturday not sunday * Patrick suggests a scavenger hunt for easter eggs. maybe in next semester?s picnic? * Cameron Hall First Aid * Have dates, Annique has emailed casey * Cameron Hall Quiz Night * Annique has started writing quiz night questions. The poster is done and is disgusting. Jack will put it up into the clubroom soon. The ultimate shitpost of a poster. They still haven?t had another meeting but have organised a lot of stuff in chats. * Unisfa Goes Panto * Talked to Leah and we are reorganising book club for that day, Leah is moving to wednesday for that week. * Unisfa Goes Alien * Kai is free for all alien movies beforehand but we will need to confirm precise timing. Emp not approved due to myguild but there shouldn?t be any issues. Marathon during the day and then go at night to the movies. Can just meet at Innaloo cinema if people do not want to marathon all the aliens movies. * Welfare Week * Emp is in but my guild is not working so we?ll have to deal with it. * Unisfa Goes Zoo * Emp confirmed, booking with zoo confirmed, all a go and we?ll make a Facebook event soon. And we have several options for payment. * We could pay on the day and get people to bring money on the day. It would be better if the Zoo will send us an email. We will only have to pay based on who comes which is good. * Camp * The sub committee meeting happened. The emails to DARE have happened and things are going. 3. Screenings * Monday - Lucifer w/Annique - Simon can?t make it so Annique will run it * Tuesday - Final Fantasy w/Tom, he will bring playstation * Wednesday - Book Club w/Leah - AI in sci-fi * Thursday - Unisfa goes Pantomime * Friday - Danger 5 w/Theo 4. Facebook Groups * We have an issue, Facebook has realised that unisfa is not a person. could just call it unisfa smith? the name is the issue * Panto?s one is working, but ours is similar to a UN group which could be why it was flagged * need to be subtle, and clear about who we are * Science Union is SU which is like a person?s name which could be why their one is still fine * We will do a trial and error to see what we can do. We need to make it work as it could be permanent. * We need to do events and zoo thing so will sort it out today or tomorrow. We still got under 500 members right now with 499 members so need to invite people quickly * Edward makes a quick zoo event before it goes up again 5. Book Removal Book Appeals * No new appeals Book Removal List * Dickon by Marjorie Bowen * Historical fiction on Richard the Third, about the politics, betrayal and battles of the time, doesn?t have the ghosts from shakespeare * Motion to add book to Removal List - motion passes unanimously * Psycho by Robert Bloch * Book about a woman who is murdered at the hotel, the book the Hitchcock movie was based on. * Motion to add book to Removal List - motion passes unanimously * The Philadelphia Experiment: Project Invisibility by Charles Berlitz * A conspiracy book about a ship in the Philadelphia boatyard which mysteriously vanished due to an invisibility natural event, author believes that it is real and meant it as non-fiction * there are conflicted theories over whether due to sci-fi elements, it could count as relevant to us. Author?s intent? * discussion from other members on Facebook post to see other ideas/opinions is important and is valued in our decisions * Motion to add book to Removal List - motion passes with 7 votes for and 2 votes against * The Professionals 10: Cry Wolf by Ken Blake * 3 people part of CI5, a new department for getting rid of crime. a more buddy cop series, tv series of it. 10th book in the series, based on the episodes of the series * Motion to add book to Removal List - motion passes unanimously * The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman * Similar to animal farm, anthropomorphised animals in a retelling of the holocaust. * pretty contested over fiction v non-fiction, fable maybe? * made with animals to make it lighter and easier to read by author. * one of the most critically acclaimed graphic novels * real world lightened up just enough through the anthropomorphic characters * more absurdism than science fiction and fantasy but still an important graphic novel for the clubroom * Motion to add book to Removal List - motion fails with 6 votes against and 3 votes for Books up for Removal * The Bird Smugglers by Joan Phipton * just a book about rescuing birds * Motion to remove from the library - motion passes unanimously * Dianetics by R. L. Hubbard * One appeal made on the basis that we don?t have enough Hubbard books already and religious texts should be in the library * proto-religious, not science fiction really, if not religious than pseudo science fiction * Motion to remove from the library - motion passes with 7 votes for and 2 abstains * Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan * not fantasy or science fiction at all, misleading title, * Motion to remove from the library - motion passes unanimously * White Lie by John Templeton Smith * very similar to action books, general action thriller with CIA * Motion to remove from the library - motion passes unanimously 6. Tenancy * Annique has talked to Taylor about compact bookshelves in corridor and we will probably be able to do it if we give up some of our tenancy given space. * We don?t know yet how many cupboards we will be getting so we need to know that first to have a bargaining tool * Have lost books to mould so anthologies and a lot of books could fit in the compact bookshelves * The cupboards have been used to store books already so we wouldn?t lose space really. * Annique will propose for us to have one cupboard near the clubroom and the compact bookshelves * We also need to reorganise the clubroom * We can always ask for more cupboards if we need them. 7. General Business * Scrapbooking nearly full * just need money for it, Harry agrees to organise a budget for it * Fridge Runs * Harry can?t do one this weekend, Jack and Annique will be doing it this weekend * Creative Writing and poetry club * they have competitions every 3 weeks and we can organise stuff with them * Simon wants to coordinate with them and is in talks with their committee * We could also link in with book themes and book discussions Finley Supportive Meme: Guy: Do you even lift Bro? Me: *Lifting people?s spirits* Finish: 5:40 Action Items Annique - Facebook person Edward - zoo emp, Natasha - sponsor crawl list Harry - Make fridge run list Simon - general library stuff, get quiz night prizes Katherine - look after freshers Finley - keep jack alive Jack - cameron hall quiz night posters Kurt - Camp posters Sponsor Crawl Haul We got lot of books and graphic novels so come find them in the clubroom!
