I wonder if Ubuntu requires a 686+ processor and so doesn't ship with
the non-cmov variant of libc (which is required for processors that
don't have the additional instructions introduced with the PPro).
That would explain why libc couldn't be found on a Wizard but could on
a Celeron.

FWIW I installed Debian Sarge on a Wizard the other day.  It works
well, but be prepared for the installation itself to take a few hours,
and booting the machine up to take a few minutes.  Adding more RAM to
the machine might be a worthwhile exercise if you're trying to run
modern software on it.
