[UCCBball] Game this week

Main take-aways from me, are:
*1) Sideline Inbound Defense*
- Weak-side forward has the best view and should direct the defense (who
guards the corner, is the center in the right position, where are the
offensive rebounders etc)
- Guards will most often have to defend all the way to the corner,
especially if the ball is inbounded low on the sideline, the catch, pass
back to inbounder for a screened, open 3 is pretty common and a forward
can't usually cover everything in this situation. Let the forward tell you
they have the corner, don't try and tell them, you can't see as much as
they can.
- Everybody needs to talk more.
*2) Boxing out*
- We frequently make an initial move to box someone out, then lose
contact with the player and stand still watching the ball
- The weak-side forward's main job is communication and looking for
where the offensive rebounders are going to come from.
*3) Use our fouls better*
- If a player has the inside rebounding position right under the basket
and they are going to get the rebound, foul them as they are getting the
rebound (2 arms, across their arms and the ball). This will get them the
ball at the baseline (best outcome) or 2 free throws (middle outcome),
worst case is we foul them too late and they get the bucket and a free
throw, but that's just a timing/technique thing and we should be attempting
to foul here, at least until you have 3+ fouls.
- Foul early in transition to stop the ball.
*4) Inbounding the ball*
- 2 hands is better than 1 (you can use a pass-fake for starters)
- Make sure you've looked for where the defenders are (both as a passer
and a receiver)
- Call to the player you want to receive the ball, ideally they will
then be moving towards the ball when they catch it.
- When you know you are open, call for the ball and take at least one
step towards the ball when it is passed to you.
*5) Securing a defensive rebound*
- We very, very rarely get a fast-break so avoiding turnovers is the top
priority.
- Bring the ball in to your chest with your elbows out.
- Pivot so you can see towards the basket we are shooting at
- Make sure you know where the defenders are, then make a decision to
pass or dribble.
- Throwing an unexpected pass, particularly to a forward in the back
court (defensive end of the halfway line) should not happen.
*6) Transition Defense*
- Force people to use their left hand (most players) and where possible
channel them towards a sideline
- If you are running/walking back late in defence, you have the best
view, especially for where offensive rebounders are coming from... talk!
- Ball-watching hurts us a lot in general, but in transition D most of
all.
