Subject: UCC x UWA Chess Collaboration :)
To UCC,
My name is Kevin, and I am the president of the UWA Chess Association. The UCA is a club dedicated to promoting Chess across the UWA community. We host monthly chess tournaments, weekly chess meetings and keep our club room open daily during semester. Last year, we hit our peak number of members at just under 200.
I am contacting you as we were hoping to do a collaboration with the UCC. We want to create a ranking system, so people can keep track of their chess ability relative to other players. We want to do this to make it easier for players to find other players of a similar skill level, so players can keep track of their own skill level, to assist in running tournaments, and also to encourage more members to participate in club events (e.g. we want to give prizes to the most improved player each semester).
International chess organisations and online chess sites use the Elo rating system to keep track of chess rating (https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Elo_rating_system). The general gist of it is that two players play against each other, with the winner gaining points and the loser losing points based on the expected outcome of the game.
You are the first club we contacted as we believe you have the technical skills and experience to implement a user-friendly Elo-tracking system. In return, we could advertise the UCC each time we use the Elo-tracking system. This could include in weekly e-mails to members of the current UCA rankings, during tournaments, during our weekly Chess n' Chill events, or in our club room that is open daily. A lot of our members are studying Computer Science related degrees (including myself).
The first step is to have a discussion about what this would entail. I am free for either a phone call, or meeting on campus sometime during the evenings next week.
As semester starts soon, please let me know if you're interested and when you are free to discuss.
Kind regards,
Kevin Shah Mansouri
UCA President 2022
