Hello,
My name is Thomas Newman, (UCC username: deltaTom). I’m writing to committee to apply to be added to UCC’s door group.
My motivations for doing so are the following:
1. I live on campus and wish to come into UCC often. However, I am often not able to gain access to the clubroom because it is not open. I usually have to wait for CY to be in the clubroom. Were I added to the door group, I would be able to use the fact that I live locally to ensure that the clubroom is open more often, and I would be able to come into the clubroom more often to do so. For example, I would be able to regularly study in the clubroom.
2. I believe that I am capable of performing the responsibilities of the door group, and that I understand the requirements of the position:
* I am currently the treasurer for the UWA Pantomime Society, as well as Fresher Representative for The UWA Society for Creative Anachronism. As a result, I am familiar with the types of responsibilities that generally come from being entrusted to welcome members of a club and ensure they are following its rules.
* I have read UCC’s regulations, and in particular the door group manual. I understand the role of door group members to consist of the following:
* Being able to open, and thus “hold” the room (i.e., being allowed to have the room open without the need for another door/committee member in the room).
* Being the “face” of the clubroom and being friendly and welcoming to all UCC members.
* Ensuring that members within the clubroom are informed of and are following UCC’s rules and regulations where applicable.
* In the case that members repeatedly do not follow the rules after being warned (or in the case of severe rules violations such as violent behaviour), “dooring” members. This means temporarily restricting their access to the clubroom until at most the next committee meeting.
* In case of emergency (e.g., someone who has been “doored” refuses to leave the clubroom), knowing and calling the relevant UWA contact numbers (or at minimum where to find them).
* Understanding how to operate and audit the dispense system, not only to unlock the room itself but to provide dispense credit/refunds to members in the appropriate circumstances.
* Signing up new members, including knowing how to make UCC accounts for new members and crediting their dispense account.
* Ensuring that when closing the room, including but not limited to:
* Binning litter;
* Ensuring no member nor their property is in the room when it is closed;
* Turning off lights, fans and the soldering iron.
* Closing and locking the tool cupboard, machine room, the window and the room door itself.
I hope that committee sees fit to grant my application to join the door group.
Cheers,
Thomas Newman
