You don't use your home directory because you (I'm not talking about you
personally, Dunc) then forget to delete it, an we have mountains of space
on /home tied up with useless crap that nobody wants to delete in case it
is still being used.

You might not use /tmp because it's on the root partition and might not
have enough space.  And our systems are probably mis-configured enough to
not auto-delete /tmp every day, and the root partition fills up, leading to
bad things.  I don't know how close this is to reality, but the /home
argument still stands.

That's a very good question.  It isn't auto-deleted every day, which is a
good thing considering what people have put there.  Guys, don't put
historical Marvin data in a tmp directory.  Please.  (I've moved it to
/home/other/marvin (for want of a better place) and fixed up the file
names).
