Well, Luke is a cool guy who does lots of open source stuff,
and its his main source of income, so I am in no hurry to replace it.

They don't necessarily need to use NetInfo to do Mac OS X
logons - the new directory services API gives you plenty of other
options if you are using post Mac OS X software (ie not current Mac
OS or Mac OS X Server, but including the next version of OS X Server,
which is unreleased and based on the Mac OS X codebase (I have a beta
seed)). I think Luke is the guy who wrote the OS X PAM support, BTW.
He has also done some stuff to do with OpenLDAP with a Netinfo
backend, which is another possibility.
If the University is really interested, they could do worse
than offer Luke money.
