Hmmm... I tried to reproduce it with by getting
ftp://typhaon.ucs.uwa.edu.au/pub/vsta/current/gcc.tz (11MB) to
morwong:/tmp with ncftp - I get about 820 to 840 Kbytes/second .

Nah, that's something different. NFS over UDP, to servalan's crappy
10Mbps onboard PCnet32 ethernet (kernel 2.4.9, I think). We tried
putting in a 100Mbps card a while ago, but it wouldn't co-exist with
JP's extra IDE controller. Time to fiddle with that fileserver, too.
The full/half duplex could definitely be an issue, but if that was the
trouble I'd expect the throughputs to be even more horrifying, eg under
100K/sec .
