[tech] Disappearing HDD space

my only thoughts would be

1) the swap file is changeing size do to something needing to use it. or

2) XP might uses some disk size estimation system that doesn't actaully
 check the size untill you ask it to so it initialy shows the estimated
size, then checks it to makes sure its correct or not.  or.

3) its just slow in doing its disk size checking . 

those are just thoughts on the matter, and i have no way of varifying any
of them.
