This went fairly well, although I had some trouble netbooting manbo, the 
solution involved setting up madako as a bootparamd server and using a 
sysidcfg file. The A1000 remains uninstalled for lack of a terminator, and 
a decision on where to locate it in the machine room. Issues resulting 
from the upgrade are limited to Sun changing how nfs shares work. Bonuses 
include HAL support (so GNOME will build better), and ZFS hot-spare 
support - there's a 18gb and 36gb spare currently available for /space.
