[committee] Fwd: Convocation Clubs - Good idea or bad idea? Or Both?

Hi all,

I just thought I'd forward this on to the public list. This seems like a
very early consideration of ideas, but we've been asked to respond and I
do think having input is a good idea.

Before we get to writing a response, does anyone have any points that
they want to raise?

Cheers,

James [MPT]/

Convocation Clubs - Good idea or bad idea? Or Both? Tell me your
thoughts to send to the higher ups!

Convocation Clubs - Yes or No?

WHAT IS CONVOCATOIN?
Convocation is an enduring legal part of the University, comprising
mainly the graduates of the University, whose living numbers approximate
125,000. All of these graduates are lifetime members of the University.
Membership of Convocation is open to members of academic staff of the
University as well as graduates. Members of Convocation are entitled to
certain benefits like free library membership to all UWA Graduates.
There is a Convocation committee who head the Convocation group (in a
way). More details can be found by Googling.

To keep you guys up to date, there has been an idea to add more clubs to
UWA. However, these clubs will be classified as _Convocation Clubs and
will cater towards the graduates of the University. _It has been brought
up in conversation with some members of the Convocation Committee and
SOC Committee.

Currently, the status quo is that once the student members of UWA Guild
clubs and societies graduate, they are no longer eligible to participate
in Guild club activities due to constitution regulations or event and
meeting timings eg during the day.   However, for those who wish to
continue their involvement in these activities, Convocation wishes to
provide the opportunity for these graduates to form Convocation clubs
and societies and continue to have clubs as a social aspect in their
lives after they have graduated. So my question to you execs is: *_would
having Convocation clubs and societies be a good idea worth pursuing? _*

While this proposal has received in-principle support from Convocation
Council, before proceeding further we would value your thoughts on the
viability of implementing suitable arrangements to form these
Convocation clubs and societies.

  * What obstacles do you forsee?
  * What effect (if any) do you think it will have on our clubs in the
    Guild sphere?
  * What potential collaborations could come out of this venture?

Be aware that thi_s WON'T AFFECT THE SOC GRANT POOL aka dw your $ is
safe_, and these clubs won't be an exact duplicate of the clubs we have
now. They will be there as clubs for graduates to join and the good
thing is that there probably won't be as much of a high turnover rate as
ours because Convocation is for life. They won't have to deal with new
execs after the third/fourth/fifth year execs graduate after one year on
committee.

Anyway, I would ideally appreciate a response from every executive group
as to how THEIR club would benefit or be affected by the implementation
of Convocation clubs and societies or if they can see any
merits/questions/flaws to this plan. Please email or comment on the

That's all from me, for now.

Ciao

Taco
